Ellie Harrison, a tall, self-described “geeky” junior-to-be, temporarily moves to Annapolis with her eccentric parents, two medieval history professors who are on sabbatical. At Avalon High, Ellie proves herself capable and curious, and she’s paired with Lance on a literature project for Mr. Morton, a pairing that quickly reveals Lance as a likeable enough kid but a bit of a slacker beneath his popular surface. Will soon becomes a constant presence in Ellie’s world, dropping by her home for dinner and leaving her with a crush that grows as she learns more about his life, his Navy-officer father, and the complicated family ties that connect Will to Marco Campbell, a troubled teen who was expelled from Avalon High.

The social circle spins further when Ellie uncovers a painful truth at a post-football party at Will’s house: Lance and Jennifer are having an affair behind Will’s back. Marco hints that he knows more than he lets on, adding a darker undercurrent to the evening. On a following day, Will invites Ellie to a sailing trip with Lance, Jennifer, and Marco, a invitation that leads to a tense confrontation on the water. A visit from Mr. Morton and a shocking revelation about the Order of the Bear—an ancient fraternal group that believes King Arthur will be reincarnated—turns the story toward a supernatural undertone. Morton explains that Will, whose full name is Arthur, is the reincarnation at the heart of a prophecy, but the betrayal by Jennifer and Lance has left him hesitant to fight the looming evil, embodied by Marco.

Morton’s warnings deepen when Ellie learns that Will’s supposed stepmother is actually his biological mother, which in turn makes Marco Will’s half-brother. The tension peaks as Marco steals Will’s father’s gun and goes on the run. In a final push, Ellie aids Will by presenting a medieval sword—that her father had been studying—foreshadowing her own connection to the legendary Lady of the Lake, who would provide Excalibur to Arthur in legend. This revelation reframes Ellie’s role in the mythic cycle and cements her bond with Will as they face the looming conflict together.
