During British rule in India, a father vows to make his only surviving son, Narayan (Nani), a brahmachari to atone for the deaths of five children. He sends the eleven‑year‑old to a remote Karnataka village, placing him under the learned Archarya Udup Pandit. Nani befriends two other disciples, the Archarya’s widowed daughter Yamuna, and Shrikar Upadhyay, who teaches the British Hindi. When the Archarya returns after a short absence, the village is upheaved: Yamuna is pregnant, villagers plan to expel her, and they resent the Archarya for refusing her to follow traditional Hindu widow customs.
