In 1989 a collective of avant‑garde artists who had collaborated privately for years was granted permission to stage an exhibition at the National Art Museum of China. The agreement excluded performance artists, leaving seven out. Those seven responded with a series of seven actions during the opening ceremony; the event was interrupted by gunfire, changing their lives forever.
