Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Linda abandons Dodge because she has been having an affair with someone else. When she returns some forgotten mail to Dodge, Penny inadvertently reveals the affair, which sends Dodge into a rage. Though the film shows her leaving immediately after the asteroid news, her decision is motivated by her pre-existing infidelity rather than the impending apocalypse.

Dodge tries to kill himself after learning that his wife Linda was having an affair. The revelation, combined with the overwhelming knowledge that the world is ending, pushes him to despair. He mixes cough syrup with Codeine and drinks window cleaner in an attempt to end his life.

William is an eccentric driver who tells them his darkly humorous desire to be killed. During their journey together, he nearly leads them to a dangerous situation. After they escape, William is buried in a whimsical manner by Dodge and Penny, adding a moment of absurdist humor to their trip.

Speck is Penny's ex-boyfriend who is exceptionally prepared for the apocalypse. He possesses a satellite phone and helps Penny contact her family in England. He also provides Dodge and Penny with a Smart car, enabling them to continue their journey to Somerset and strengthening the bond between the two travelers.

The ending is bittersweet because Dodge and Penny finally confess their love for each other, but they have only hours left before the asteroid destroys Earth.
