Geologist Tom Baines is involuntarily admitted to a hospital after rambling incoherently about a town called Comet Valley. An FBI agent arrives and insists on hearing Tom’s story from the beginning, which unfolds largely in flashback. The setup positions Tom’s recollection as the primary path to understanding the threat in Comet Valley.

Tom travels to his rural hometown of Comet Valley to examine a locally discovered meteorite and deliver a geology talk to the Fireball Club. The town is temporarily cut off by bridge repairs, heightening the sense of isolation. His assignment marks the start of a chain of odd events that will soon grip the community.

Tom stays at Heidi Tucker's bed-and-breakfast and reconnects with her, meeting her niece Kim, Deputy Sheriff Brad Yates, and orchard owner Ed Busta. These meetings pull him into the town's dynamics and hint at the coming trouble. The growing social web becomes the backdrop for the investigation.
