C.J. Walker is a brilliant young scientist who dreams big: she’s determined to build a time machine with her best friend, Sebastian “Bash” Thomas. Their journey begins with a first attempt that ends in failure, coming just before the final day of school. Their last class, taught by Mr. Lockhart, becomes a turning point. The two teenagers want to showcase their project at the upcoming science expo in the week of July 5, hoping to attract curiosity and perhaps university scholarships. Mr. Lockhart challenges them to weigh the ethical and philosophical implications of time travel, nudging them to consider not just what their invention can do, but what it should do. The stakes escalate on July 4. Calvin, C.J.’s older brother, and his friend Dennis head home from a party after a confrontation with Jared. As they walk away, a tense moment unfolds: two other men collide with them in a rush down the street, and soon a police car arrives. The officers misidentify them as thieves due to the night’s earlier chaos, and tragedy strikes when one officer kills Calvin. The community mourns, and Calvin’s funeral marks a turning point in C.J.’s determination to shape the outcome of the day through time.

Grief gives way to resolve as C.J. insists on trying to save Calvin, this time with Sebastian by her side. A fourth attempt seeks to rescue both Sebastian and Calvin. The same officer who previously killed Calvin appears again, and the tension culminates in Calvin’s tragic decision to sacrifice himself so that C.J. and Sebastian can escape the danger. Back in the present, the tension between C.J. and Sebastian deepens.
