What Happens at the End of Sebastian?

How Sebastian (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The ending of the series reveals that Viktor's entire perceived reality was a creation of his mind, a labyrinth of hallucinations and suppressed memories. As he finally uncovers the truth, he realizes that his daughter Josy did not simply disappear—he was responsible for her fate. Viktor’s childhood trauma, including witnessing his parents’ tragic divorce and his mother’s suicide, played a significant role in his psychological breakdown. His deep-seated guilt and fear of losing loved ones drove him to create a fictional world where Josy was safe. Throughout the series, Viktor believed he was protecting her by drugging her, thinking he was curing her mysterious illness, which was actually a manifestation of his Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. In reality, it was Viktor who caused her disappearance; his compulsive need to control and care for her masked his underlying guilt. His mental state crumbled as he continually built a false narrative to shield himself from the truth—the truth that he had inadvertently harmed his own daughter.

When Viktor awakens from his coma, and the layers of his hallucinations are peeled back, he comes to terms with his responsibility. He admits that he was the one who drugged Josy daily and caused her suffering. The story's final moments show Viktor deciding to face the consequences of his actions by handing himself over to the police, acknowledging his guilt. The series ends with the revelation that Josy is alive but hidden away by Isabell, who managed to bring her back to life and kept her safe from Viktor’s broken psyche. Viktor’s encounter with his daughter, even if in his imaginings, symbolizes a fragile hope for reconciliation and redemption. The ending underscores the devastating impact of trauma and denial, illustrating how Viktor’s mind desperately tried to shield him from the unbearable truth of his actions and his fractured past. Ultimately, the series leaves viewers contemplating the thin line between reality and illusion, and the importance of confronting painful truths for true healing.
