In a quiet village, the life of Roopa is shaped by a childhood tragedy that left a lasting mark on her right cheek and neck. A pot of boiling oil burned that side of her face, so she grew up concealing the injury behind the veil of her sari. Yet despite this visible scar, Roopa remains deeply religious, visiting the village temple every day to sing hymns and devotional songs that lift the spirits of those around her.

Enter Rajeev, a dashing engineer who comes to oversee a vital dam project and carries a strong aversion to anything he views as ugly. He hears Roopa’s lilting voice and is drawn to her, not knowing the truth of her disfigurement, and falls in love. He asks Roopa’s father for permission to marry, convinced that their bond is real. Roopa loves him wholeheartedly and does not want to deceive him. She pleads with her father to reject the proposal so that Rajeev would not marry under a false impression. Yet the village pressures her to give love a chance, and she eventually agrees to marry Rajeev, hoping that true love would accept her condition.

After the wedding, Rajeev’s world tilts when he discovers the truth about Roopa’s scar and the life she’s led hidden behind her veil. Feeling deceived, he distances himself, disowning her and driving her out of their home. He roams the village on what should have been their wedding night, convinced there must be another Roopa, another girl with the same name waiting for him somewhere else.

Roopa, now rejected by the man she loves, contemplates suicide. She is saved when Rajeev, in a strange twist of fate, believes he has found the woman he could love as his mistress, not realizing she is his wife. After this rescue, Roopa resolves to meet him again at night, but this time she chooses to reveal herself beneath a veil only to preserve her dignity and hope for a second chance.

What unfolds is a painful clash between pride, love, and misunderstanding. Rajeev spends his days with indifference toward his wife and his nights with a supposed mistress, unaware that the two are one and the same woman. When Roopa becomes pregnant, Rajeev’s doubts harden into accusation; he shames her publicly and sends her back to her family, a blow that devastates her and even costs her father his life, consumed by grief and the weight of the moment.

Roopa’s vow hardens: she will not return as merely a mistress. The village braces for a new storm as nature itself seems to mirror the turmoil in their hearts.

A terrible storm finally strikes, tearing open the dam that Rajeev had been sent to repair. The village is flooded and the people begin to evacuate while the shutters give way to the torrent. Roopa, accompanied by her uncle, moves through the chaos, and in the flood’s glare she lets go of the veil and her true voice returns to the bhajan she loves. It is in this moment that Rajeev, searching for his “mistress,” hears the familiar voice and realizes that his wife and his lover are one and the same person.

Amid the swirling waters, he sees how shallow his judgments have been and he acts with courage to save Roopa from drowning. In the moment of crisis, he asks for forgiveness and chooses to embrace Roopa fully, accepting her once more as his wife. The story closes on a note of redemption, where love, perseverance, and a renewed understanding of true beauty triumph over fear and prejudice.
