In a moment of desperation, a young woman named Katie makes a dramatic exit from her suburban Boston home. She leaves behind a bloody knife, hinting at the violent circumstances that compelled her to flee.

With the intention of starting anew, Katie purchases a bus ticket and undergoes a drastic transformation, cropping and bleaching her hair. She adopts a new name and leaves her troubled past behind to seek refuge in Southport, North Carolina.

Arriving in Southport, Katie begins to carve out a life for herself, securing a job as a waitress and renting a modest home. Her intent is to remain hidden and lead a quiet existence away from the chaos she left behind.

As Katie settles into her new life, she forms a bond with her warm-hearted neighbor, Jo. Their friendship provides Katie with much-needed support and a sense of community in her new surroundings.

Katie catches the eye of Alex Wheatley, a widower managing a local convenience store. Despite his grief over his late wife, Alex is drawn to Katie and begins to show his affection through small gestures of kindness.

Alex, seeking to include Katie in his family, invites her on an outing to the beach with his children, Lexie and Josh. This shared experience not only strengthens their bond but also hints at a developing romantic connection.

During the festivities, Kevin shows up at Katie's workplace in a frenzied state, desperate to bring her back to Boston. His aggression escalates as he threatens her life, creating a tense atmosphere of fear and urgency.
