Earlier, Lung-er witnessed Siu-bo's cunning and leadership during the ambush on the wedding procession, which likely planted the seed of respect.

The Princess was forced to marry Ng Ying-hung by the Emperor as a political arrangement to monitor General Ng Sam Kwai. However, she was already pregnant with Siu-bo's child. By helping Siu-bo castrate Ying-hung, she ensured that Ying-hung could no longer produce heirs, effectively ending his dynastic line and freeing herself from the marriage. Siu-bo uses a body-swap technique to exchange Fung Sek-fan's body with Chan Kan-nam's just before their scheduled execution. This allows Chan to escape in Fung's body while Fung is left in Chan's body facing execution. The swap demonstrates Siu-boxe's ruthless cunning and ultimately secures his master's safety while gaining favor with the Emperor.

Siu-bo had previously demonstrated his willingness to use deception and manipulation to survive difficult situations.

The One Arm Nun is an anti-Qing revolutionary seeking to disrupt the Emperor's grip on power. She ambushes the wedding procession carrying the Princess and Ng Ying-hung to create chaos and potentially assassinate or capture key figures. The ambush results in a fierce fight with Lung-er and ends with the rebels escaping with both Ying-hung and Siu-bo.

The One Arm Nun's anti-Qing stance was established early as a major revolutionary force in the political landscape.

Siu-bo accumulates five wives (Lung-er as third, Princess as fourth, Ah Ko as fifth) through a combination of strategic alliances, survival necessities, and romantic entanglements. Each marriage serves different purposes: Lung-er's marriage saves her life and transfers her power; the Princess's marriage consolidates his connection to royal bloodline after castrating Ying-hung; Ah Ko's marriage seals a new alliance after her capture. This reflects the chaotic political environment where marriages become tools for power consolidation.

Siu-bo's roguish reputation and multiple romantic entanglements are established from the brothel scene.

The Dragon Sect supports General Ng Sam Kwai's bid for the throne. Their plan involves Lung-er (who posed as the false Empress Dowager) eventually abdicating in Ng Sam Kwai's favor, after which he would abdicate back to Lung-er, placing her on the throne. This political scheme explains why Lung-er must maintain her false identity and why she returns to the sect after being exposed.

The sect leader reminds Lung-er of this mission immediately after her exposure as the false Empress.

Siu-bo operates under the alias Wai Siu Bo as part of his role in the Heaven and Earth Society, a resistance group. He is also a roguish fighter with a reputation for lecherous behavior. His double life as both a brothel regular and a Heaven and Earth Society commander creates conflicts throughout the film, as different factions attempt to use his allegiances against him.

Siu-bo's comfortable presence at the brothel contrasts with his serious combat skills revealed during fights.

Fung Sek-fan, originally aligned with Ng Sam Kwai's campaign for the throne, ultimately surrenders Ng Sam Kwai's battle plans and Chan Kan-nam to the Emperor. This betrayal appears motivated by self-preservation and the promise of favor with the victorious side. However, his betrayal ultimately fails as Siu-bo masters the power Chan helps develop and defeats Fung in the final confrontation.

Fung's willingness to poison Lung-er and turn her followers against her demonstrates his early capacity for betrayal.
