Having been revealed as the false Empress Dowager, Lung-er [Sharla Cheung Man] returns to the Dragon Sect camp. The sect leader reminds her of their mission to back Ng Sam-kwai, the military general [Paul Chun Pui] as Ng Sam Kwai’s bid for the throne unfolds, with the unspoken plan that he will abdicate in Lung-er’s favor. The atmosphere is tense, and loyalties are tested as every player’s move seems designed to tilt the balance of power in a struggle that stretches beyond a single throne room.
Siu-bo, the roguish but capable fighter [Stephen Chow] who operates under the alias Wai Siu Bo, lounges at a brothel he once frequented, savoring a temporary sense of freedom before trouble returns. He is swiftly confronted by disciples of the One Arm Nun, a fervent anti-Qing revolutionary figure who seeks to disrupt the emperor’s grip on power. The confrontation leaves him bloodied and briefly defeated, but he uses cunning and bravado to turn the tables, only to be exposed by Ng Ying-hung, the son of the military general Ng Sam Kwai [Kent Tong Chun-Yip]. Ying-hung sees through Siu-bo’s pretense, revealing his lies to those who would listen. In the chaos that follows, Siu-bo orders his men to pursue Ying-hung, but Lung-er—disguised at the moment as Ying-hung’s male bodyguard—intervenes with surprising effectiveness, fending off Siu-bo’s men and complicating the feuds that swirl around the palace.
At court, the Emperor, wary of Ng Sam Kwai’s ambitions, makes a political calculation that reshapes personal relationships as well. He arranges for the Princess to marry Ying-hung and designates Siu-bo as the Imperial Inspector General of the wedding march, a move intended to keep a close watch on Ng Sam Kwai’s activities. This arrangement strains Siu-bo’s relationship with the Princess, especially when she reveals she is pregnant with his child, stitching their fates together in a web of duty, desire, and dynastic intrigue.
The One Arm Nun and her disciple Ah Ko stage a bold ambush on the wedding procession. A fierce fight erupts with Lung-er, who holds her ground long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but the adversaries slip away with Ying-hung and Siu-bo in tow. Siu-bo earns Lung-er’s grudging respect when he discloses his double life as a Heaven and Earth Society commander, a revelation that reframes the grudges and loyalties of everyone present. Lung-er manages to catch up later at an inn with the help of new allies, rescuing Siu-bo from a dangerous trap, while Ah Ko and Ying-hung slip away in the confusion, their fates tangled with the rest of the players.
Back at the Dragon Sect camp, Ying-hung and Fung Sek-fan secretly poison Lung-er and sow distrust among her followers. Lung-er, now tasked with staying alive long enough to complete her mission, must escape with Siu-bo. A brutal and heartrending requirement follows: she must sleep with a man before dawn, or she will die, and the act will transfer four-fifths of her martial arts power to her partner. Siu-bo’s lecherous reputation precedes him, yet Lung-er recognizes a kind of blunt honesty in him that she regards as a sign of virtue. In a moment that fuses sacrifice with strategy, Lung-er yields to Siu-bo and becomes his third wife, a decision that shifts the balance of power and love within their tangled circle.
When Siu-bo returns to the Princess, a calculated plan unfolds to castrate Ying-hung, stripping the heir of the ability to produce heirs. The Princess, no longer bound by traditional constraints, becomes Siu-bo’s fourth wife as he claims her in a bid to disrupt Ng Ying-hung’s line. Enraged by the prospect of a dynastic end to his line, Ying-hung gathers his troops and resolves to strike at the Emperor directly. Fung Sek-fan is tasked with eliminating the Princess and Siu-bo, while Chan Kan-nam intervenes, allowing his disciple to escape with his life.
The conflict intensifies when the One Arm Nun captures the elopers, Ying-hung and Ah Ko, and presents them to Siu-bo. In a surprising turn, Siu-bo pardons them and even takes Ah Ko as his fifth wife, weaving new loyalties and alliances into the tapestry of the power struggle. Fung Sek-fan’s fortunes rise when he surrenders Ng Sam Kwai’s battle plans and Chan Kan-nam to the Emperor, a move that consolidates the Emperor’s grip on the battlefield but complicates Siu-bo’s already tangled relationship with the Heaven and Earth Society. The Emperor then tasks Siu-bo with Chan Kan-nam’s execution, testing Siu-bo’s control over the newly acquired power that Chan helps him harness in time to turn the tables on Fung.
As the intrigue deepens, Siu-bo uncovers the secret behind the legendary 42 Chapters books. After burning them in frustration, he discovers stones that were left unburned, revealing the map coordinates to a treasure that all major parties have been chasing. The realization reframes the conflict from a battle over succession to a race for hidden wealth that could alter the fate of many involved.
In a climactic sequence, Siu-bo fights to save his master and outmaneuvers Fung with his newly mastered powers. He and Fung fall into a hidden cave where the treasure lies, and in a desperate gambit, Siu-bo swaps Fung’s body with Chan Kan-nam’s before their scheduled execution to secure Chan’s safety and, by extension, the Emperor’s favor. Just as escape seems possible, the Emperor arrives with his troops. Siu-bo’s ally To-lung, who has fallen into a romantic entanglement with Siu-bo’s sister, has betrayed them, but the bonds of friendship and love prove stronger than betrayal. Seeing the loyalty between Siu-bo and his sister, the Emperor pretends that Siu-bo has died, choosing to erase him from the record. Siu-bo, however, revels in the victory of having duped the imperial powers and smiles at the Emperor’s downfall, remarking that the ruler has fallen for his bluff.
The saga unfolds as a sprawling, interwoven tale of power, love, and daring escapes, where loyalties shift as quickly as fortune, and where a roguish hero must navigate a gauntlet of alliances, betrayals, and ancient secrets to determine not just who wears the crown, but who gets to shape the destiny of those who live in its shadow. Along the way, several complex relationships—between Lung-er, Siu-bo, the Princess, Ying-hung, and a constellation of allies and adversaries—come to define a world where power is both a weapon and a vulnerability, and where sacrifice can be as pivotal as strength.
