In summer 1816 Mary and Percy Shelley and Claire Clairmont stay with Lord Byron at Lake Geneva, where he urges them to write horror stories. Mary begins Frankenstein, fearing a monster will become real. Over six years tragedy follows—Claire bears Byron’s child and is estranged, Shelleys move to Pisa, and Byron and Percy’s friendship endures.
