Route 666

In a bar in Arizona, Federal Marshal Jack La Roca and Stephanie cuff Fred 'Rabbit' Smith and assign him to testify against Benny Buffalino in Los Angeles. Rabbit is hunted by hitmen led by Sergei. Jack orders a car driven by four marshals—Nick, Mary, P.T., and Joe—to pick them up before Sergei's men arrive, and the team departs for LA.

Jack learns about Route 666, a condemned road alongside Route 66, and hears the prison road crew accident that sealed its fate. He experiences a series of flashbacks showing four prisoners digging a hole under watchful eyes. The road's ominous history casts a shadow over the convoy as they press toward California.

The marshals reach a deserted tourist attraction bordering Route 666. Jack contemplates using the road, then reveals personal history: he was born nearby, his mother died when he was six, and he hardly knew his father. The past intersects with the present as they debate the road's risks.

County deputy Gil spots the marshals on Route 666 and calls for backup. His father, Sheriff Conaway, orders him to leave the road restricted, but Gil proceeds to stop the convoy. When Jack flashes his badge, Gil relents and lets them pass.

The group finds a cemetery where Jack locates his father John La Roca's grave. PT finds three other infamous tenacious murderers from the 1960s—Miles Hackman, Frank Slater, and Steven Pikowski—revealing a history of crimes connected to the road. La Roca is described as a bank robber who turned to family life, then returned to crime.

Mary and Nick leave Joe to guard Rabbit while they go into the Suburban for privacy. Sergei appears and shoots Rabbit and Joe; Joe returns fire and kills Sergei. The undead corpses of Slater, La Roca, Pikowski, and Hackman rise and kill Joe.

Nick falls asleep in one car and is killed by Slater. The survivors discover the zombies can only travel along the road and cement, rising from underground. Rabbit, handcuffed to a pole, is attacked by Pikowski but manages to escape.

Jack finds a telephone booth, dials 911, and connects with Sheriff Conaway through the Los Angeles Marshal’s office to request backup. He informs them about the road's curse and the need for reinforcements as the situation grows more dangerous.

Jack experiences a further flashback showing his father and others—Slater, Hackman, Pikowski—working on the road. Hackman tries to escape, but an unseen officer compels them to dig a hole. In the present, the past crimes echo, hinting at the road's enduring curse.

Sheriff Conaway and deputies close in, cornering Jack and Rabbit as Conaway holds the others at gunpoint. Conaway shoots Mary to coerce PT into divulging Jack and Rabbit's location.

Jack captures Gil and escapes in a truck, handcuffing Gil to the vehicle. The four zombies arrive and kill Gil, sealing his fate and escalating the danger for the marshals.

The unseen officer revealed as Sheriff Conaway and his men shoot the convicts in their legs and bury the four murderers—La Roca, Slater, Hackman, and Pikowski—alive in a hole, concealing their crimes. After learning the zombies have returned, Conaway's group continues to kill anyone who steps on the road to cover up their deeds.

The zombies converge on Jack, Steph, and Rabbit; they are pinned down, but Jack confronts his father, John La Roca, who reveals himself and kills the remaining zombies. John gives Jack his dog tag before crossing into Heaven, lifting the curse on Route 666.

Conaway attempts to shoot the trio from the SUV, but Jack, Steph, and Rabbit shoot him; he is killed by a ghost road roller. With the curse ended, Jack, Steph, and Rabbit walk toward Los Angeles.

The trio continues toward Los Angeles, free from the road's curse and the dead's menace as they move into an uncertain future.
