As dawn breaks over the South Pacific Ocean in 1897, a dinghy bearing three souls drifts toward the horizon. Two adults rest lifelessly while a fragile infant named Richard lays secured between them, destined for a perilous journey.

The crew comes across the dinghy and rescues the child, handing him over to Mrs. Sarah Hargrave, a widow caring for her young daughter, Lilli. Their hopes for a blissful voyage are soon crushed as cholera spreads among the crew, leading to dire consequences.

As chaos unfolds on the ship, crew member Kearney attempts to silence the cries of two-year-old Richard. In a moment of fierce protection, Sarah strikes Kearney with a harpoon, ending his threat and casting his body into the ocean depths.

Washed ashore on a lush tropical island, Sarah vows to raise Lilli and Richard into well-mannered individuals amidst their newfound freedom. She nurtures Richard with discipline through Biblical tales and guides them cautiously around the island's dangers.

Eight years pass peacefully until Sarah succumbs to pneumonia, leaving Richard at age 10 and Lilli at age 8 orphaned once again. In her final moments, Sarah instills in them the vital skills of survival before being laid to rest near the tidal reef.

One evening, Richard ventures into uncharted territories of the island and stumbles upon a group of natives enacting a chilling ritual. He narrowly escapes when a perceptive native spots him, as he cleverly disguises himself in the muddy surroundings.

The tranquility of the island is shattered with the arrival of a lively ship and its boisterous crew. Richard and Lilli welcome them but are unprepared for the ensuing tensions, especially when the captain's daughter, Sylvia, tries to capture Richard's interest.

Sylvia attempts to seduce Richard but he realizes Lilli is his true companion, resulting in a stormy departure from Sylvia. Ashamed, she finds herself in a comical predicament while Richard asserts his commitment to Lilli.

Sailor Quinlan becomes infatuated with Lilli and attempts to seize her cherished pearl. When Quinlan turns violent, Richard stands up for Lilli, and in an act of bravery, lures Quinlan to his demise at the jaws of a lurking shark.

Returning to Lilli after the confrontation, Richard expresses his remorse for the chaos. In a heartfelt revelation, Lilli discloses her pregnancy, and they vow to cultivate their future on the island together, embracing the quietude they’ve found.
