Katusha, a humble country girl, is seduced and then abandoned by the aristocratic Prince Nekludov. Years later Nekludov serves on a jury that convicts Katusha of a crime he now realizes stemmed from his betrayal. Determined to atone, he follows her to a Siberian prison, hoping to redeem both her and himself.
