Renfield

Renfield, an English lawyer, initially traveled to Transylvania to negotiate a land deal with Count Dracula. However, he inadvertently became Dracula's familiar, a supernatural servant bound to the vampire. This happened when Dracula turned Renfield into his assistant, granting him supernatural abilities fueled by consuming bugs, but also trapping him in a codependent relationship with the vampire.

After relocating to New Orleans with Dracula, Renfield discovered a 12-step self-help group for people in codependent relationships. Seeking freedom from Dracula's control, he joined to learn healthier relationship patterns and eventually devised a plan to use the group members to hunt down abusive partners, whom he could present to Dracula as sustenance without guilt, essentially reframing his villainous work as a form of justice.

When Renfield betrayed Dracula by providing police information about the Lobo crime family, Dracula viewed this as a severe betrayal. In retaliation, Dracula brutally murdered Renfield's entire support group, demonstrating both his wrath and the toxic nature of their relationship, punishing Renfield for attempting to break free from his control.

Earlier in the film, Dracula expresses dissatisfaction with Renfield bringing only criminals and demands more innocent blood, hinting at his willingness to harm those Renfield cares about.

Renfield and Quincy first crossed paths during his missions against the Lobo crime family. After Dracula murdered Renfield's support group, Quincy found Renfield amidst the carnage and took him into custody. However, upon learning of Renfield's genuine desire to change and break free from Dracula, Quincy chose to rescue him and form an alliance against both the Lobo family and the vampire.

After Renfield killed several of Teddy's men, Teddy's mother ordered him to find the responsible party. Teddy tracked down Dracula, whom he encountered during Renfield's absence, and formed an uneasy alliance with the vampire. Both had common enemies (Renfield and Quincy), making their partnership strategically beneficial despite their differences.

Quincy tricked Dracula into a final confrontation by luring him with the promise of her sister as bait. Together, Renfield and Quincy trapped Dracula within a magical circle, likely the same one Renfield had used throughout the film. They then battled the vampire, pulverizing him into pieces and draining his potent blood, finally destroying the immortal threat.

Renfield grew increasingly disillusioned with Dracula, especially as the vampire demanded more innocent blood rather than just criminals. Inspired by his codependency support group, Renfield sought to forge his own path and live a normal life. Providing police information about the Lobo crime family was his first concrete step toward freedom, though it triggered Dracula's violent retaliation.

Dracula's growing dissatisfaction with criminal victims and demand for innocent blood earlier signaled the breaking point in their relationship.

The film suggests Renfield retained his supernatural abilities even after breaking free from Dracula, as he continued using his bug-powered strength throughout the final battle. However, his true power came from his personal transformation, moving from a victim of codependency to someone who chose his own path, which proved more meaningful than his supernatural abilities.

Renfield convinced his support group members to hunt down abusive partners in exchange for helping them with their codependency issues. He would then present these abusive individuals to Dracula as food, framing it as eliminating harmful people rather than killing innocents. This plan allowed Renfield to continue serving Dracula while justifying his actions through a moral lens.

The Lobo crime family, led by Teddy Lobo, was heavily involved in drug trafficking. When Renfield killed one of their assassins and began hunting down Teddy himself, he became a direct threat to the family's operations. Additionally, Renfield's actions led to Teddy's arrest and subsequent escape, making him a persistent enemy of the Lobos.

After defeating Dracula and draining his potent blood, Renfield used the vampire's blood, which possessed miraculous healing properties, to resurrect his support group friends who had been murdered. This act completed Renfield's transformation and demonstrated the ironic reversal of using Dracula's own power for good.
