Naren returned to Calcutta with every intention of winning his family's approval for his marriage to Ganga. However, his father Jeeva, a powerful politician, refused to accept the match. Naren was trapped by family pressure and his own inability to defy his father, which prevented him from going back to fulfill his promise.

After being exploited in Rishikesh and nearly assaulted in Benaras, Ganga was rescued by police but still found herself trapped. She later fell into the clutches of a man named Manilal who lured her to a brothel near Benaras. From there, the wealthy politician Bhagwat Choudhary purchased her and kept her at his bagan bari as a concubine.
