Naren, a wealthy Calcutta politician, travels to Gangotri to study the Ganga's source and collect holy water. There he meets Ganga Singh and they fall in love by the waterfall. They decide to marry and share a passionate night together.

Back in Calcutta, Naren tells his family about Ganga and his wish to marry her. He promises to return soon to win their acceptance.

With Naren away, Ganga learns she is pregnant and later gives birth to their son. Meanwhile, Karam is killed by enemies, leaving her alone and more determined to reach Naren.

To reunite with Naren, Ganga begins a long journey from Gangotri toward Calcutta. The road is perilous and she keeps hope alive despite increasing danger.

In Rishikesh, while traveling, Ganga is exploited by two women and a man. The brutal incident marks a dangerous turn in her journey and underscores the risks she faces on the road.

In Benaras, a Pandit molests Ganga, and the police intervene to rescue her, giving her a travel ticket back toward Calcutta. The ordeal highlights her vulnerability yet again.

After Benaras, Ganga falls into the clutches of Manilal, who lures her to a brothel near Benaras. Her plight worsens as she is trapped in exploitation.

Bhagwat Choudhary, a rich politician, buys Ganga and keeps her as a concubine at his bagan bari. This arrangement places her under the control of a powerful man and distances her from Naren.

Bhagwat plans to marry his daughter Radha to Naren, under the false belief that Ganga is dead. The plan is to keep the couple apart and preserve the family prestige.

Kunj Bihari, Naren's maternal uncle, locates Ganga in bagan bari and arranges for her to dance at Naren's wedding to test whether he can recognize his wife.

Naren finally recognizes his wife, Ganga, during the wedding performance, challenging the deception surrounding their relationship.

Jeeva refuses to accept Ganga as his daughter-in-law, and Naren learns about his son, deepening the family conflict and secrecy.

Naren and Ganga attempt to leave with their son, but Bhagwat shoots Ganga in a fit of rage. Naren then lashes out at Bhagwat, believing his wife has been killed.

Radha informs Naren that Ganga has survived, and they flee with their son to the river Ganga, choosing to start a new life together away from danger.
