Raja Rani

A young widow sacrifices her modesty to save her child from illness and commits suicide. Her death shocks the child, who runs away when he sees his mother's dead body.

The child runs away after seeing his mother's dead body and grows into Raja, a handsome and intelligent thief who outsmarts the police. His life is spent on stealing and evading capture, establishing a reputation for daring escapes.

Raja lives with his friend Tony, who dreams of marrying his girlfriend Mary. Raja continues his life of crime, stealing from houses and slipping away from the authorities.

During a house theft, a police chase forces Raja to hide in a marriage hall. He discovers a letter from the groom who ran away and uses it to pretend to be the bridegroom, veiling his face with flowers.

Raja marries the girl in the hall, masking his identity from her and the groom's father. On the wedding night, he escapes the room without seeing his wife, who is also veiled.

The original groom dies in an accident on the same night, casting suspicion on Raja. Raja is arrested by the police and jailed for six months.

The bride Nirmala is cast out by her in-laws for being unlucky and returns to her uncle's home. Poverty and isolation drive her to wander, and she ultimately turns to dancing as a courtesan.

Raja is released from jail and searches for the wife he married, but cannot find her. He stays near where Nirmala, now known as Rani, works as a dancer, and their first tense encounter leads to mutual attraction after he defends her from an unruly client.

Rani and Raja fall in love without knowing their true relation and decide to reform. Both agree to stop their former misdeeds—Rani quits dancing and Raja quits stealing.

Rani helps transform a client, and his wife accepts her as a sister as a result. At the client's child's birthday party, the wife presents Rani with a saree and a necklace.

Rani loses the necklace given by the client's wife. To recover it, they struggle and must break a promise they had made to each other without the other's knowledge.

Raja goes to steal in a home and finds Rani dancing for the owner. When the owner tries to misbehave, Raja rushes to save her, and in the struggle the owner is killed; Raja is blamed.

Raja is arrested and then justifies himself in court, leading to his acquittal. After the trial, Raja and Rani marry, ending their tale on a hopeful note.
