What Happens in Rafiki: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Rafiki (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Kena Mwaura, Samantha Mugatsia, helps her father, John Mwaura Jimmy Gathu, run a small convenience store in Nairobi as he campaigns for a local election. Kena’s home life is tense, with her mother not on speaking terms with John, which colors her days while she watches the political race unfold from the storefront’s glass and the busy streets outside.

Kena’s world shifts when she starts flirting with Ziki Okemi Sheila Munyiva, a neighborhood girl known for her colorful hair and the fact that she is the daughter of Peter Okemi Dennis Musyoka, John’s political rival. The pair embark on a series of romantic dates, and their bond deepens quickly, even as they navigate the dangerous reality of displaying affection in public in a country where homosexuality is illegal.

As the romance grows, Ziki’s friends grow jealous of the time she spends with Kena. When they lash out at Kena, Ziki defends her, a moment that intensifies the scrutiny they face. Ziki invites Kena into her world by taking her home to tend her wounds after the assault, but the moment is ruined when Ziki’s mother discovers the kiss between them. They attempt to disappear together, but they are eventually found by the town’s gossip, who summons an angry mob.

The mob’s anger leads to arrests for both girls, and their fathers must intervene to shield them. The fallout is severe: Ziki can no longer bear to stay, and her parents decide to send her to London. John refuses to let Kena shoulder the blame for what happened, even though accepting that responsibility could cost him the election he has worked toward for so long.

Years pass, and Kena achieves her long-held dream of becoming a doctor. She receives word that Ziki has returned to town, stirring a cautious hope. The film closes on the moment of their reunion, a delicate reminder that, despite the distance and time apart, their love has endured and remains a force worth pursuing.
