Puppet on a Chain

The U.S. government assigns special agent Paul Sherman to track the Dutch heroin source. Upon arriving at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, Sherman immediately witnesses an undercover agent named Jimmy Duclos being shot by the assassin. This brutal opening sets the tone for the international drug war.

Amsterdam's chief of police, Colonel De Graaf, resents American interference and pushes back against the operation. Inspector Van Gelder, however, is more cooperative because his niece Trudi suffers from brain damage caused by heroin eight years earlier. Sherman becomes entangled in local politics from the start.

Sherman makes contact with Maggie, a deep-cover agent from Washington who works in Amsterdam. Maggie helps him navigate the drug trafficking networks and points him toward the Dutch operation. Their alliance marks the first tenuous bridge between Sherman and the local insiders.

Sherman is tailed by the assassin as he moves around Amsterdam, hinting at a mole inside the drug ring. The pursuit creates a constant sense of danger and paranoia. Sherman tries to shake off the tail but remains under threat.

Sherman corners the assassin in his hotel room and a lethal struggle ensues. In a tense turn of events, Sherman accidentally kills the attacker. The confrontation shifts the mission from pursuit to a personal reckoning.

Sherman encounters Duclos' girlfriend Astrid Lemay and her drug-addicted brother George. The meeting pulls him deeper into the drug world he has come to disrupt. Astrid's presence also ties the operation to the personal lives affected by heroin.

George's overdose underscores the human cost of the heroin trade. The tragedy intensifies Astrid's vulnerability and increases the stakes for Sherman. The case begins to intersect more intimately with the victim's families.

Shortly after George's death, Astrid Lemay is murdered, likely by Meegeren's orders. Sherman senses a widening web of violence closing in on him. The safety of those around him diminishes as the case escalates.

A man on a boat attacks Sherman, and he shoots the assailant dead. The hunt intensifies as Meegeren's reach appears to extend into everyday transport corridors. The action shifts from street corners to the waterways.

Meegeren kills Maggie by hanging her from a chain and then holds Sherman prisoner. The level of danger escalates as Sherman realizes he is facing a powerful, ruthless drug lord. This turning point forces Sherman to rely on every skill to survive.

Meegeren escapes on a speedboat, and Sherman gives chase on another vessel. The pursuit takes them across the Dutch waters as the net tightens around their operation. The tension peaks as the boats race through the canals and harbor.

The speedboats collide and Meegeren's boat is destroyed by fire. Sherman survives the wreck and continues toward breaking the operation. The dramatic escape marks the end of the wild pursuit.

Sherman and a colleague arrive at a warehouse run by Morgenstern to track the distribution network. Mugenthaler, Morgenstern's partner, is absent in this film adaptation.

Inside the warehouse, Sherman discovers that Van Gelder and his niece Trudi are involved in the trafficking operation. He learns that Trudi had been faking her mental disability to mislead others. The revelation reframes the entire investigation.

A climactic shootout leaves Trudi dead and Sherman wounded. Van Gelder attempts to escape but is killed by Sherman, removing another weak link in the operation. Sherman survives and closes the case, though the moral cost lingers.
