In the not-too-distant future, Earth is devastated by a plant-killing virus that drops oxygen levels. The mission lands on a newly terraformable planet with a thin, unstable atmosphere and a 16 °C surface temperature, forcing the crew to wear oxygen masks outside the lander. They establish a temporary base around a cave where the Sphere is activated, which begins to alter the environment and sustain life on the surface. Later, the crew unexpectedly travels back in time to four billion years ago, on a young Earth.
