Sam Ipswich discovers Glory Eden, an orphan, and launches her as the Purity Girl on the Ippsie Wippsie Hour. He believes her image must match the show's squeaky-clean persona to promote the product, the washcloth of dreams. In about three months she rises from obscurity to a national sensation.

Glory longs to be a party girl who drinks, dances, and meets men. She listens with envy as Vera, her maid, describes Harlem's nightlife. Ipswich pushes to sign a new contract, but Glory resists because it would prohibit the very freedoms she craves.

Ipswich is eager to sign Glory to a new contract, hoping to tighten or refine her image. Glory throws a tantrum and refuses, insisting on her freedom and the right to enjoy nightlife. The tension hints at bigger power plays behind the scenes.

Glory selects a fan letter from Kentucky and is drawn to 23-year-old Jim Davy. She sees his photo and feels an instant attraction. Ipswich, Speed, and Herbert prefer someone else, but the presence of sob-sister reporter Elmerada de Leon forces them to go along. The fan letter becomes Jim's unlikely audition for fame.

Speed Dennis travels to Kentucky to persuade Jim Davy to accept a 10-day stay in New York. He frames the trip as a chance for Glory to find romance on air, maximizing publicity. Jim, though bashful, agrees under pressure when the appeal of fame becomes clear.

Jim arrives in New York and the press expects him to marry Glory immediately. Speed nudges a romance into place to fuel the on-air ceremony. The wedding is conducted on the air, turning their union into a publicity stunt.

Tim Kelsey assigns O'Connor to steal Glory for his own radio program. O'Connor proposes aiding Jim and Glory's private Atlantic City honeymoon, revealing the marriage is merely a publicity stunt. Jim's eyes open to the manipulation, shaking his trust.

Jim confronts the reality of the publicity scheme and O'Connor's motive. He initially believes Glory wants to retire from showbusiness and settle down. The revelation sows doubt about their real feelings.

Glory discovers that the Kelsey contract imposes no lifestyle restrictions, and she is eager to sign. Jim then takes Glory to his home in rural Kentucky, hoping to escape the media glare.

As they settle into country life, Speed arrives and pressures Glory to return to New York. He hatches a plan for Vera to perform as the Purity Girl that night, which backfires and stirs Glory's jealousy. O'Connor is present, and Glory ends up signing his contract.

Back in New York, Jim refuses to let Glory perform without him. Speed has hired Jim as a poet for Ippsie Wippsie.

To solve the conflict, Ipswich and Kelsey merge their companies to form Ippsie-Kelsey Clothies, and Jim and Glory perform together as a duo.
