This is a tender portrayal of Walburga "Wally" Neuzil, the mistress of artist Egon Schiele, and the fate of the portrait painted of her. The artwork is a prized possession of the Leopold Museum in Vienna, but its history is complicated. It was lost for 13 years, embroiled in a legal dispute between the museum and a Jewish family who had been forced to surrender it to the Nazis in 1939. The portrait’s journey reflects a painful chapter of art history and the legacy of Nazi plunder.
