In 1987 colour slides found in a Vienna bookstore proved to be a collection taken in the Łódź ghetto by Nazi accountant Walter Genewein, who prized efficiency and photographed Jews as subhuman. Director Dariusz Jabłoński repurposes the images to recreate inmates’ suffering, offering a compassionate portrait of ghetto life. (Storyville)
