Superintendent Jake Carson is the skilled leader of a team of smoke jumpers stationed in the remote woodlands of California, close to the town of Redding. Known for his ability to handle crises, Jake takes immense pride in his profession, diving headfirst into perilous situations to save civilians. His team consists of the incredibly loyal Mark Rogers, the anxious and neurotic Rodrigo Torres, and the enormous mute known as Axe, who is rarely seen without his trusty fireman’s axe.
Jake considers smoke jumpers to be an elite group, emphasizing that only 336 exist across the entire USA, in stark contrast to the thousands of firefighters nationwide. His team frequently parachutes straight into the heart of ferocious wildfires to rescue individuals trapped without hope. Beneath his tough exterior, however, Jake struggles with emotions, often overlooking even those young children who express their gratitude. It’s even mentioned that women seeking a fresh start are drawn to him, yearning to leave their husbands for him. Additionally, Jake’s father’s legacy as a smoke jumper adds a personal layer to his dedication.
When four of Jake’s crew members make the decision to transfer to the prestigious Santa Barbara smoke-jumping team, the stakes are raised. Amidst this turmoil, Jake undertakes a daring rescue of three children from a burning cabin, a moment captured live by a Channel 6 news team. Following this heroism, Commander Richards, who is revered among the ranks, contacts Jake to commend him and reveals that he is being considered as a candidate for the division commander position—a role that Jake dreams of achieving.
As Jake navigates his professional aspirations, Mark Rogers reminds him of their responsibility under “Safe Haven Laws” for the children: Brynn, Will, and Zoey, ensuring they receive care until parents or guardians arrive to reclaim them. However, tensions escalate as Brynn displays a lack of gratitude, much to Mark’s frustration, and the children’s antics lead to chaos at the fire station, including Will mistakenly igniting flares he believes to be toys.
While trying to finish his application for division commander, Jake faces a barrage of antics from the children, alongside a visit from his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Amy Hicks. A local environmentalist, Amy opposes the smoke jumpers’ use of water from habitats critical to endangered toads. In their conversation, Jake insists his priority lies with human lives, but their earlier romance hangs in the air, a relationship he put on hold due to his relentless ambition.
The challenges intensify when, overnight, Will causes havoc by destroying the station’s pickup, and Zoey’s antics lead to further chaos. Surprisingly, despite the initial struggle, the smoke jumpers slowly begin to connect with the children, with each jumper imparting unique skills. A particularly pivotal moment arises when Brynn and Will reveal to Jake that they are orphans evading foster care, fearing separation. This revelation deepens the bond between them as they anticipate Zoey’s birthday, leading Jake to promise a delay in involving Child Services.
With a heartfelt plan in motion, the smoke jumpers go above and beyond to celebrate Zoey’s birthday, even buying presents for Brynn and Will. Jake shares a poignant bedtime story that resonates with Brynn and Amy, reflecting Jake’s own relationship with his father’s legacy and his struggles with emotional connections. However, just as they begin to celebrate, the unexpected arrival of Commander Richards and Child Services leads to further complications, culminating in a thrilling rescue when Brynn finds herself trapped in a car teetering on the edge of a cliff.
In an emotional concluding sequence, Jake, inspired by Richards’s advice about the importance of family, takes a stand against Child Services and expresses his wish to adopt all three children. The film wraps up with the joyous union of Jake and Amy, with the smoke jumpers and their newly adopted children celebrating together, highlighting the strength of newfound family bonds amidst the trials they endured.
