Garlic and Gimmick are two young CID police officers who ride the edge of bravado as they dive into a dangerous drug case. Garlic, who literally loves raw garlic, comes from a wealthy family and has little need to work, yet he chooses to be a cop because he genuinely enjoys the work. Gimmick, by contrast, is dirt poor and depends on Garlic for everything—from his clothes to his daily life. Both men carry a heavy dose of arrogance, convinced they’re irresistible to women and destined for greatness.
Their informant’s fate arrives while they wait in a park, dying but able to tell them where the drugs are hidden. The moment the informant passes, Garlic and Gimmick celebrate, bragging that they won’t have to pay him now. They ride the wave of success as they broadcast their drug bust on the nightly news, flaunting the confiscated evidence. The drug lord, furious at the televised triumph, sends out his thugs to strike back.
The hit is calculated: they lure Gimmick out of a bar using a clever setup with an alluring woman and snap photos to blackmail him. Garlic rushes to help, only to find a note demanding the return of the drugs they seized, or the scandalous pictures of Gimmick will hit the newspapers. In their impulsive, reckless pursuit of the criminals, their actions grate against the city and set off a chain of trouble that catches the attention of Police Chief Chief Wong.
Chief Wong lays it out bluntly: the mess can’t continue, and Garlic and Gimmick need to lay low for a few years. He offers three undercover assignments as a way to reform their approach. The first would see them go to Thailand to pose as transvestites to test drug networks—both refuse, citing personal reasons. The second would have them pose as gay lovers to investigate a homicide at a gay club—again, both refuse. With two options rejected, they are left with the third: go undercover at Wong Fei Hong High School to protect the daughter of the future Hong Kong Police Commissioner, Kong Mei-lai.
At the school, the pair quickly realizes they don’t fit in with the other students. The dean makes their first day a test of endurance, warning they’ll be beaten with famous kung fu moves if they don’t perform. Gimmick nods off in class and is beaten to stay awake; Garlic, who gets a math problem right, is still punished for being cocky. They skip lunch late and face brutal reminders of discipline. Frustration grows as they consider requesting transfers back to the two earlier missions.
Enter Miss Yip, the stern tutor assigned to whip them into shape. Miss Yip proves to be more than a private teacher; she’s a covert ally from Chief Wong, tasked with ensuring they actually learn. The dean leaves, and Chief Wong imposes a punishing regimen to push Garlic and Gimmick through the material they need. In a desperate move to keep them on track, a SWAT distraction is arranged to help them cheat on their examinations, allowing them to pass.
With the tests finally behind them, the real assignment finally begins as Kong Mei-lai arrives at the school, setting the stage for a mission that blends undercover discipline with high-stakes policing, and forcing Garlic and Gimmick to confront their flaws, grow as officers, and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.
