A humanoid alien named PK lands in Rajasthan for a research project. Unfortunately, he loses his beacon locket, which leaves him stranded on Earth, setting the stage for his adventures.

PK finds himself bewildered by human customs and resorting to stealing money from couples in cars that are dancing. His confusion with societal norms leads to frequent misunderstandings.

PK is accidentally struck by the vehicle of Bhairon Singh, leading him to lose consciousness. Bhairon takes him to a doctor, who mistakenly believes PK has amnesia from the accident.

Initially contemplating abandoning PK, Bhairon’s pity for him leads to an unexpected friendship. Bhairon welcomes PK into his traveling troupe, navigating the complexities of their new bond.

PK misinterprets Bhairon’s intentions and ends up in a brothel, where he unintentionally holds a prostitute's hand for six hours. This experience assists him in grasping the Bhojpuri language.

As PK roams the streets of Delhi searching for his missing remote control, locals assume he's drunk due to his peculiar behavior. They start to refer to him as 'PK,' which translates to 'tipsy' in Hindi.

Determined to find his remote, PK seeks the guidance of God but becomes bewildered by the many contradictions in Indian religions. This journey leads him to question the authenticity of religious practices.

PK discovers that self-proclaimed God-man Tapasvi Maharaj holds his remote and is misrepresenting it as a divine artifact. Tapasvi refuses to return it, prompting PK to challenge the misconceptions surrounding religious leaders.

In Bruges, Jaggu falls in love with Sarfaraz, a Pakistani man, but faces disapproval from her father. Despite her resolve to marry Sarfaraz, she receives a letter ending their engagement, shattering her hopes.

Heartbroken, Jaggu returns to India to become a television reporter. She becomes intrigued by PK's story and convinces her boss Cherry to allow her to cover it, shifting her focus to more substantial issues.

Jaggu plans a public confrontation to help PK expose Tapasvi Maharaj during a Durbar event. With PK's compelling arguments and Jaggu's coverage, they begin to sway public opinion about false religious claims.

Amid the public support they garner, PK receives devastating news of Bhairon's death in a bomb blast carried out by extremists. This loss weighs heavily on PK as it underscores the consequences of his outspoken nature.

During a live broadcast, Tapasvi claims to have direct communication with God. PK, leveraging his knowledge of Jaggu's emotions, reveals Sarfaraz did not write the breakup letter, turning the narrative in their favor.

As PK prepares to return to his planet, he struggles to confess his feelings for Jaggu, knowing her heart lies with Sarfaraz. Instead, he collects her voice messages to remember their time together.

A year later, PK embarks on another research mission back to Earth, this time accompanied by other aliens. His experiences have changed him, and he is ready for new adventures, reflecting on his time with Jaggu.
