The film opens with a timeless parable that evokes Adam and Eve, casting Ranjeet Chhadha [Sanjeev Kumar] as Adam, Sharda Chhadha [Vidya Sinha] as Eve, and Nirmala Deshpande [Ranjeeta Kaur] as the tempting apple. A newly hired employee who commutes by bicycle, Ranjeet’s modest job hints at a simple, steady life. That bicycle brings him into contact with Sharda when they collide, her bike gets badly damaged, and he dutifully drops her off. That same evening, he attends the wedding of his friend Harish, where Sharda’s presence in the same colony becomes a spark. Their paths cross, and from that moment love blooms, cementing a quick and lasting marriage between them.

Over the next few years, the couple settles into a comfortable life: Ranjeet rises to Sales Manager, and they welcome a son into their home, seemingly cocooned in marital bliss. This tranquil balance is disrupted when Nirmala Deshpande [Ranjeeta Kaur], Ranjeet’s new secretary, enters the scene. Nirmala is earnest and hardworking, trying to make ends meet, and she carries a grace that far surpasses Sharda in certain aspects. Unaware of Ranjeet’s true intentions, she becomes the unwitting target of his growing attraction. At first, Ranjeet resists, but pushing feelings eventually win out, and he yields to temptation.

What follows is a careful, calculated plan. Ranjeet pretends to be the grieving husband of a cancer-stricken wife who won’t live long, playing on Nirmala’s compassion to draw her closer. This pretense remains hidden from Sharda and even his closest friends, allowing him to pursue a discreet liaison. One evening he excuses himself to a supposed late meeting and takes Nirmala out to dinner; the next day a handkerchief with lipstick marks—clearly from Nirmala—turns up in Ranjeet’s pocket, prompting Sharda to confront him. He manufactures a cover story about a coworker’s handkerchief, and Sharda, though shaken, chooses to believe him.

Ranjeet escalates his ruse with a poetic flourish: two books of poetry, identical in content, one containing Nirmala’s name and the other Sharda’s, become tools to charm Nirmala while keeping Sharda in the dark. He courts Nirmala on the side, keeping his wife in the shadows of suspicion. The turning point arrives when Sharda witnesses him in a hotel with Nirmala and presses him for explanations. He lies, and Sharda’s doubts grow into careful skepticism. She begins to spy, gathering incriminating photos and evidence.

Secretly, Sharda meets Nirmala under the pretense of journalism. Nirmala, who has not yet seen Ranjeet’s ailing wife, believes Sharda intends blackmail, but Sharda clears the air and reveals her true identity. The revelation comes just as Ranjeet is promoted again and rushes home to share the news with Sharda. She confronts him with the mounting proof, and in a tense confrontation, Ranjeet realizes the game is up when he sees Nirmala behind him. Sharda declares that she will leave, and the divorce papers will soon follow. Nirmala bravely supports Sharda, returning any money Ranjeet tries to pass off as a peace offering.

The aftermath is painful but decisive. Sharda and Nirmala stand together, and the marriage fractures under the weight of deceit. Their son, innocent in the center of the storm, asks what is happening, adding a poignant touch to the unfolding consequences. Sharda, however, cannot abandon the hope of reconciliation, and she offers Ranjeet another chance for their son’s sake as life inches back toward a fragile normalcy. Yet the pattern nearly repeats when a new secretary arrives, and Ranjeet finds himself drawn to old habits once more. A coincidental visit from his friend acts as a warning, prompting Ranjeet to back off, choosing restraint over relapse.

In the end, the film leaves a quiet note on forgiveness, accountability, and the lasting impact of choices made in moments of vulnerability, exploring how love, loyalty, and truth contend with temptation and the consequences that emerge when trust is broken.
