Aracy de Carvalho, a young clerk at the Brazilian consulate in Hamburg, secretly issues unmarked passports to Jews for two years, saving them from the deadly “J” stamp that would consign them to concentration camps. When diplomat João Guimarães Rosa arrives, they fall passionately in love. Aracy later receives Yad Vashem’s Righteous Among the Nations honor, while João becomes Brazil’s most celebrated twentieth‑century writer.
