Passion Flower

Cassy confesses to Dulce that she loves Dan. Leroy Pringle banishes Cassy from the family house. Dulce offers to shelter the couple and arranges for them to marry the next day as a gesture of support.

The couple relocates to the city and rents a small attic in a boarding house run by Mrs. Harney. Dan quickly finds a job down at the docks. They begin their new life together in a modest urban setting.

The story jumps to their fifth wedding anniversary. They now have a toddler named Tommy and an infant daughter named Margaret. Dan has been promoted to assistant foreman, but they still live in the attic and struggle to make ends meet.

Dulce visits and questions why Cassy and Dan will not take the ranch she has kept for them. Dan loses his job, triggering an argument with Dulce. Afterwards, Dan looks at Tommy sleeping and feels a shift toward responsibility.

The family moves to the ranch, with Mrs. Harney joining as housekeeper. From the first day, Tony pays close attention to the exchanges between Dulce and Dan and begins to suspect there is more than friendship at play.

Dulce and Dan share an intimate moment at the ranch. Tony confronts them and pleads with Dulce not to break up Cassy and Dan's marriage. Dulce questions why she cannot have happiness.

Dan contemplates running away with Dulce but ultimately goes to Dulce's house to end the relationship. He wants to be useful again and do right by his family.

Cassy learns that her father is ill and asks Dulce for a ride to the ferry. She walks in on Dan and Dulce kissing through the glass, and Dan confesses to Cassy. Devastated, Cassy kicks Dan out.

Dulce and Dan host a raucous party after the breakup. A letter from Cassy arrives offering forgiveness if they ever return. Dan says he has been happy but cannot continue indefinitely, and the couple prepare to depart by ship.

On the voyage back, Dulce receives a telegram that Tony has died. She tells Dan that they can be married now, but Dan remains torn about divorcing Cassy.

Weeks after returning, Dan has not begun the divorce. Dulce visits Cassy and learns that Cassy has agreed to divorce if Dan asks for it himself.

Dan arrives to talk with Cassy as Dulce returns and the three confront each other. They argue, and Dulce realizes she has lost and leaves, ending the immediate possibility of a happy ending.
