Quentin’s life took a dramatic turn the day Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne) moved in next door. He cherished her as his one true love, and they formed a close friendship, sharing countless adventures. However, everything changed the day they stumbled upon a deceased man, a victim of his own despair over an impending divorce. While Quentin remained unfazed, Margo was deeply affected. Not long after, she appeared at his window, enthusiastic about solving the mystery surrounding the dead man’s wife who worked at Sea World. Despite Quentin’s hesitance to go out so late, Margo was undeterred and pedaled off on her bike. Quentin mused, “Margo loved mysteries so much, she became one,” as her life was marked by wild escapades.

Fast forward to their teenage years, Margo became a popular girl at school, while Quentin (Nat Wolff) didn’t quite fit in. Their connection faded after that childhood encounter. Margo was off living the wild life, touring with a band, until one night she crawled through Quentin’s window asking to borrow his car. With her parents’ keys locked away, they decided to take his mom’s vehicle. Together, they embarked on a spree to exact revenge on those who had wronged her. Their first stop was to acquire items like Saran Wrap, a raw catfish, and spray paint.

As they exacted playful vengeance on Margo’s cheating boyfriend Jase ([Griffin Freeman]) and her disloyal friend Becca ([Caitlin Carver]), they shared thrilling moments, including Quentin nervously snapping a photo of a naked Jase fleeing across the lawn. Margo’s method of retribution escalated as they targeted Lacey (Halston Sage), Margo’s best friend, for betrayal. The two moved from house to house, causing mischief and reflecting on their lives. Over the course of the night, Quentin’s internal struggle grew—fascinated by Margo’s audacity yet afraid of jeopardizing his future.

The following day, Margo mysteriously vanished from school, prompting a search involving her parents and the police. Quentin, overcome with love for her and a desire to uncover the truth, enlisted his friends, Ben (Austin Abrams) and Radar (Justice Smith), to help him cope with her absence. They dug through Margo’s belongings, searching for clues she habitually left behind. They ventured to an abandoned building, thinking she’d left signs pointing to her whereabouts.

When Quentin gained insight into Margo’s mind via Walt Whitman’s poetry, he was resolute to find her. The fragments of clues led them down a rabbit hole of abandoned places and old records, culminating into a determination to reach Agloe, New York, a fictional map town. As they raced against time, plans unfolded: prom was looming, friendships were tested, and stakes were high.

In a flurry of teenage camaraderie, they embarked on a road trip filled with missteps, laughter, and unexpected revelations about relationships—as Lacey and Ben found romance amid the chaos. Despite the odds, Quentin faced a decision: whether to chase after the enigmatic Margo or to return to the normalcy of prom night.

Upon finally locating her, their encounter was bittersweet. Margo explained that her disappearance was intentional and that she sought solitude to discover herself away from the chaos of life. It was a moment tethered with tension, love, and a realization of choices made. Ultimately, Quentin returned just in time for prom, where he and his friends danced the night away, dreaming of their futures while the mysterious presence of Margo lingered on.
