Painted Skin: The Resurrection

For centuries, the fox demon Xiaowei has been imprisoned in icy isolation due to her transgressions against the demon code. Her powers have been rendered dormant, kept frozen alongside her in confinement.

Xiaowei's life takes a turn when she encounters Que'er, a playful bird demon who inspires her to seek redemption. Together, they embark on a quest to find a mortal who would be willing to sacrifice their heart to restore Xiaowei's humanity.

In their search, Xiaowei and Que'er approach a haughty prince, hoping he would be the one to sacrifice his heart. However, the prince dismisses them, leading Xiaowei to steal his heart with ease as a demonstration of her power.

They then set their sights on General Huo Xin, whose face is obscured by a golden mask. Xiaowei uses her magic to immobilize him, only to discover that he is actually Princess Jing, the youngest royal, scarred from a past bear attack.

As night falls over the White City, Xiaowei casts her enchantments on Huo Xin, unbeknownst to him. Feeling betrayed, Princess Jing jumps into a lake, but Xiaowei saves her by revealing her magical abilities, forging a bond between them.

After a heartfelt conversation, Xiaowei convinces Jing that her disfigurement will ruin her chances of winning Huo's heart. In a moment of desperation, they agree to swap appearances to test Huo's true feelings for Jing.

As Que'er wades through the moonlit streets, she faces danger from two unsavory individuals. Just in time, Pang Lang, claiming to be a descendant of demon hunters, intervenes, offering assistance and protection to the demon pair.

Disguised as Xiaowei, Jing casts a spell to enchant Huo. However, during this process, she accidentally reveals Xiaowei’s true spirit, compelling Huo to act, yet the enchantment protects him from taking any harmful actions.

Amidst the turmoil, the Tianlang kingdom, led by a malevolent sorceress, invades White City in search of Princess Jing, who is about to be wed to their prince. In a moment of courage, Jing negotiates her own surrender to protect her city.

As tensions mount, Jing proposes a remarkable solution: to offer her heart to Xiaowei. This act would allow them to switch bodies, thus allowing Xiaowei a chance at redemption and enabling Jing to escape her fate.

Xiaowei, disguised as Jing, infiltrates the Tianlang camp, only to realize her betrothed is the very prince whose heart she had consumed. This plot thickens as she contemplates using her heart to rejuvenate him, putting her in danger.

Que'er confides in Pang Lang about the swap between Xiaowei and Jing, prompting him to rush to convey this vital information to Huo. With this revelation, they hope to thwart the impending danger that looms over Jing.

Just as Jing is about to consume her first heart to transform fully into a demon, Huo blinds himself with his sword. This act shatters the enchantment controlling him, showcasing his unwavering love and resolve to save Jing.

As the battle nears its conclusion, both Jing and Xiaowei unite to reclaim Jing's heart from the Tianlang forces. Huo offers his own heart as a substitute for Jing's, but Xiaowei ultimately chooses to restore Jing's heart instead.

Under the shadow of an impending eclipse, Xiaowei’s essence merges with Jing, restoring the princess's beauty. As the tale closes, Huo and Jing embrace their new journey together, while Pang Lang notices the return of Que'er in her true form.
