Other Mommy Timeline Explained: Your Questions Answered

When does it happen, and why in that order? The questions people ask about the chronology of Other Mommy (2026): time jumps, flashbacks, cause and effect between scenes and the correct order of events, each answered with spoilers.

Q1

Why does Other Mommy target Bela specifically?

Other Mommy is a manipulative demon that wants to enter Bela's heart because of how pure she is. According to the exorcist team led by Lois Anthony, possessing Bela's purity would allow the demon to live in a real body. Bela's emotional vulnerability, stemming from sensing the strain in her parents' marriage, makes her an easy target for the entity's influence.

Foreshadowing: Bela's quiet whispers to Other Mommy in her closet on the first night hint at the purity that the demon later tries to exploit.

  • bela
  • demon
  • purity

  • possession
Q2

What does Other Mommy mean by wanting to enter Bela's heart?

When Other Mommy talks about entering Bela's heart, she means taking over the child's innocence and purity so she can inhabit a living body. The demon repeatedly tempts Bela with promises of safety and belonging, trying to get the girl to willingly accept her. Allowing Other Mommy inside would effectively give the demon a permanent vessel on Earth.

  • heart
  • possession
  • demon
  • vessel
  • innocence
Q3

Why does Bela keep calling Other Mommy out of the closet?

Bela summons Other Mommy because she senses emotional distance in her family, particularly from her mother Ursula, and the demon presents herself as an alternative, more attentive parent figure. Other Mommy tempts Bela by mimicking the warmth and attention the girl feels she is missing, which makes the entity dangerously appealing to a lonely child.

Foreshadowing: Bela's parents' tense interaction right before bedtime, with Russell playing while Ursula only comes to send her to bed, establishes the emotional gap Other Mommy exploits.

  • loneliness
  • family dysfunction
Q4

How does Other Mommy get into Frank's high-security house?

Other Mommy is a supernatural being that operates outside physical security measures, so locks and secured walls cannot stop her. More importantly, Frank is connected to the family's emotional rot because of his affair with Ursula, and Other Mommy uses that doorway by first appearing to Bela inside the home. Once the demon has a psychological link to a family member, she can manifest anywhere they are.

Foreshadowing: Bela's earlier attempt to avoid Frank at the party hints at her intuitive understanding that he is part of the family's problem.

  • other mommy
  • frank
  • safe house
  • security
  • affair
Q5

Why does Other Mommy kill Frank in front of the family?

Other Mommy kills Frank because Bela asks the demon to make him 'go away,' and the entity takes the request literally with horrifying results. Frank is also a target because his affair with Ursula is a source of family fracture, and the demon thrives on that dysfunction. Even when Frank tries to shoot her, Other Mommy's supernatural powers let her bend his body and make him explode.

Foreshadowing: Bela avoiding Frank at the party earlier foreshadows the resentment that she later voices as a wish for him to disappear.

  • frank
  • affair
  • other mommy
  • death
  • family
Q6

Why does Other Mommy trap Bela in the ball pit and send her to an ocean?

Other Mommy warps reality to isolate Bela from her parents and deliver emotionally devastating information. The entity tells Bela that Ursula never wanted her and shows her a vision of a mansion on a hill, framing a seductive alternative reality. The trap removes any protective presence so Other Mommy can manipulate Bela without interference.

Foreshadowing: The abandoned ball pit setting echoes Bela's sense of being lost between two parental figures, one real and one monstrous.

  • other mommy
  • ball pit
  • ocean
  • manipulation
  • bela
  • isolation
Q7

Why does the exorcist team fail to banish Other Mommy?

The team fails because Lois Anthony, the lead exorcist, approaches Other Mommy with fascination rather than caution, touching the demon's skin and getting a glittery gold substance on her fingers. That substance immediately causes Lois to melt gruesomely, which breaks the séance's focus and lets Other Mommy kill the rest of the team. The demon weaponizes the exorcists' curiosity against them.

Foreshadowing: Ruth's earlier warning about letting the wrong people into your heart mirrors the exorcists' mistake of letting curiosity override caution.

  • exorcist
  • lois anthony
  • seance
  • gold substance
  • salt
  • ruth
Q8

Why doesn't the salt barrier around Ruth's house stop Other Mommy?

Salt and traditional seance rituals work against common spirits, but Other Mommy is a higher-level manipulative demon targeting a child's purity. The exorcist team recognizes that standard methods are not enough, which is why Lois attempts direct contact. The demon is simply too powerful and too personally invested in Bela to be repelled by conventional means.

  • salt
  • exorcist
  • ruth
  • seance
  • other mommy
Q9

What does Ruth tell Bela that ultimately saves her?

Ruth tells Bela to know the right people to let into your heart, and the ones to keep out. She also explains that when parents promise their kids they will never get hurt, it is a lie. This second warning becomes crucial when Other Mommy, disguised as Bela, promises the girl she will never get hurt. Bela recognizes the same false promise Ruth warned her about and uses that realization to reject the demon.

Foreshadowing: Ruth's conversation outside her home is explicitly framed as foreshadowing, since her words are what allow Bela to resist Other Mommy at the climax.

  • ruth
  • grandma
  • advice
  • heart
  • promise
  • bela
Q10

Why does Other Mommy force Ursula to confess the truth about Bela's parentage?

Other Mommy wants to destroy the family from the inside by weaponizing every secret and shame the parents carry. By forcing Ursula to admit she was married to someone else when she got pregnant, that Russell is not Bela's biological father, and that she initially did not want the child, the entity gives Bela a reason to reject her real mother. The demon's goal is to make a child feel unwanted so she will accept Other Mommy in Ursula's place.

Foreshadowing: Bela's earlier sensing of a disconnect from Ursula and the strain in her parents' marriage mirrors the deeper fractures the confession reveals.

  • other mommy
  • ursula
  • confession
  • parentage
  • russell
  • bela
Q11

How does Bela finally get rid of Other Mommy?

Bela defeats Other Mommy by physically tearing off the demon's skin after recognizing that the entity's promise of never being hurt echoes the same false promise Ruth warned her about. The disguise Other Mommy is wearing, which is Bela's own face, comes apart when Bela rejects the demon outright. Rejecting Other Mommy from her heart banishes the creature for good.

Foreshadowing: Ruth's conversation about letting the right people into your heart is set up explicitly as the tool Bela will later use.

  • bela
  • other mommy
  • defeat
  • ruth
  • rejection
  • banish
Q12

Why does Other Mommy take the babysitter Calvin's form?

Other Mommy uses Calvin's form because the babysitter briefly sees the demon and then steps out, leaving Bela alone. The disguise lets the entity get close to Bela without triggering immediate suspicion from a young child, and it gives Other Mommy a chance to again ask to be let inside Bela's heart. When Bela punches the disguised creature, the Calvin exterior comes apart, revealing the demon underneath.

Foreshadowing: Bela trying to show Calvin the creature earlier signals that she already understood Other Mommy could mimic people she trusted.

  • calvin
  • babysitter
  • other mommy
  • disguise
  • mimicry
Q13

What does the mansion on the hill that Other Mommy shows Bela represent?

The mansion on the hill is a vision Other Mommy uses to lure Bela away from her parents, suggesting a fantasy life of comfort and belonging without the messiness of her real family. It mirrors the demon's core tactic throughout the film: offering an idealized alternative to a flawed home life. The vision is a test, and the fact that Bela is later returned unharmed to her parents in the car suggests she did not fully surrender to it.

  • mansion
  • vision
  • other mommy
  • ball pit
  • manipulation
  • bela
Q14

Why does Ursula still seem unhappy after Other Mommy is defeated?

The film ends on a deliberately bittersweet note because Other Mommy was only the supernatural symptom of the family's deeper dysfunction. Ursula is still carrying the weight of having initially not wanted Bela, the affair with Frank, and the collapse of trust with Russell, none of which the demon created or can fix. Even with the entity banished, the marriage and motherhood issues that made the family vulnerable remain unresolved.

Foreshadowing: Bela sensing a disconnect from Ursula from the very first scene foreshadows that the underlying emotional gap will outlive the demon.

Q15

What does the demon Other Mommy actually represent in the story?

Other Mommy functions as a metaphor for the manipulative forces that prey on family dysfunction, including infidelity, parentage secrets, and a mother's ambivalence about motherhood. The demon weaponizes every fracture in the Martin family, especially Ursula's unspoken regret about having Bela and the affair with Frank, to try to possess the one pure member of the household. Defeating Other Mommy removes the supernatural threat but not the human issues that allowed her in.
