At breakfast, Ralph and his friends learn they will interview for summer work at Scott's Used Furniture Palace. The family braces for a busy season, while Mom discovers their dog Fuzzhead is missing, kicking off the Scary Fuzzhead Saga that will haunt them.

All three friends interview at Scott's Used Furniture Palace and are hired, described as a truly historic moment. They daydream about the money they'll make and what they'll buy.

On their first day, they tackle a grueling moving job, hauling a mammoth refrigerator up five flights of stairs. The work is exhausting and the boys quickly feel the strain in their bodies.

Back on the job the next day, they face another tall refrigerator, moving it up seven more flights of stairs. The physical toll keeps mounting as they toil through the day.

Over the next two weeks, Mom relentlessly searches for Fuzzhead, posting reward posters and placing newspaper ads. The Old Man visits the Bluebird bar and laments the delay of his vacation.

Ralph has eerie nightmares at night, including visions of a towering, laughing refrigerator. The dreams reflect the brutal, endless nature of his summer job.

News of the reward posters draws people from three counties who bring their dogs in hopes of claiming the prize. The search crowds the neighborhood as expectations rise.

Summer ends and the boys are abruptly fired, their hopeful plans dissolving in an instant. The dismissal marks the end of their first serious working experience and leaves them with a sense of unfulfilled aspiration.

The Old Man, driving around with Mom, spots Fuzzhead in the back window of a black Rolls-Royce and gives chase to the rich dowager's home where she appears.

During dinner, Ralph fibs that he quit his job to spend time with the family, freeing everyone to embark on an epic road trip. The mood shifts from domestic routine to adventurous anticipation.

The road trip begins with the car packed to the brim, a reluctant starter motor, and the kids' half-hearted enthusiasm as they set off. The trip promises misadventures and a break from factory life.

On the road they plunge into a string of misadventures: shopping for odd slob art, a flat tire, running out of gas due to the Old Man's stubborn choice of gasoline, and a roadside encounter with a growling meers hound.

They reach Clear Lake, find the fish have stopped biting, and discover the fishing tackle was packed after all. A torrential rainstorm drenches the lakeside camp all day, testing the family's patience.

A lightning strike knocks out power to the rain-drenched lakeside camp's welcome sign. The credits roll, closing the family's chaotic yet bonding road trip.
