Olive, The Other Reindeer

Olive, a bright and resourceful Jack Russell Terrier, finds herself far from ordinary as Christmas Eve unfolds into a mission to save the holiday. She crosses paths with Martini, a crafty penguin who has just been fired from the city zoo and is eager to turn a profit, setting Olive up with a counterfeit Rolex watch that kicks off a chain of unlikely adventures. Back home, Olive’s owner, Tim, is despondent, convinced that there “won’t be any Christmas” and frustrated by Olive’s refusal to act like a typical dog. The quiet frustration at home contrasts with Olive’s growing sense that something bigger is at stake.

To comfort himself, Tim tunes the radio, only to hear a news bulletin that Santa’s team is short for the year. Blitzen is unable to fly, and the rest of Santa’s reindeer must pull the weight if Christmas is to go on. A mischievous flea on Olive’s fur twists the report in a strange way, leading Olive to mishear the message as, in her mind, that she is being asked to play a key role. The flea nails the punchline with a sly tug of words:

The misread headline becomes a driving force. Upset and determined, Olive runs away to try to prove herself and to win back Tim’s trust. Along the way, a disheartened Postman — a stubborn figure who resents the added strain of the season on his already overburdened workload — learns of Olive’s plan and vows to foil it. He sees an opportunity to ruin Christmas for everyone and to satisfy his own grudge, revealing a darker motivation that links back to his past and a list that hints at misdeeds from the past.

Olive and Martini press on, catching a bus north toward the magical North Pole. Their journey isn’t smooth: during a layover in Arctic Junction, the Postman lurks in disguise, posing as a waitress and eventually kidnapping Olive. She escapes by improvising with a metal file she finds in a package marked with an odd label, a moment that feels almost like a Deus Ex Machina. Although she escapes, she misses a connecting bus and ends up in a local bar where skeptical patrons are softened by Olive’s pep and charm, and slowly their Christmas spirit is rekindled. The bar’s owner, Round John Virgin, personally escorts Olive and Martini toward the North Pole complex, where the last leg of the voyage will test every ounce of courage they possess.

At the gate, a stubborn security guard initially denies entry to Olive and Martini. Martini steps in with a clever ruse to disable the security system long enough for Olive to slip inside. The Postman trails in, delivering a parcel full of counterfeit letters that insult Santa Claus. The letters miss postmarks, exposing themselves as fakes, and Olive seizes the moment to confront the ruse. She reveals the truth and demonstrates that the sleigh cannot be canceled on the basis of forged notes. In a pivotal moment, Olive takes Blitzen’s place in the flight, though she struggles to keep pace with the other reindeer and the weight of the loaded bag.

With the sleigh in motion, Olive uses her keen nose to track the scents of the real presents and redirects Santa’s sleigh to the source of the theft: the Postman’s mail truck. In the ensuing chaos, Martini is captured, and Olive fabricates cardboard mailers into makeshift wings so she can keep flying. The weight of the flight grows lighter when the reindeer are back in tow, and Martini drives the truck while Olive helps deliver gifts to homes across the globe. A thick fog closes in just as they near Olive’s home, but Santa relies on Olive’s scent to guide the sleigh home to the North Pole (the story playfully notes that Rudolph has become more of an urban legend in this version).

Santa and his team arrive, grateful for Olive’s bravery. For her help, she is given honorary antler ears, and Comet offers her a ride back to her neighborhood. When Olive arrives home, she finds Tim relieved and proud of the courage she showed. The journey has changed more than just one dog: Martini has embraced a new line of work as a postman, while the former Postman is repurposed into a penguin with packing tape and cardboard wings, ready to work at the city zoo. The magic of the night remains alive—Olive’s legend as a helper of Christmas grows every time she remembers the people she touched and the risks she took to save a holiday worth preserving.

In the end, the heart of the story beats with a simple, hopeful message: courage and kindness can redeem even the quirkiest misfits, and a small voice—whether a dog’s, a penguin’s, or a mail carrier’s—can carry the world a little closer to Christmas.
