Odd Thomas

In his small California town, Odd Thomas senses a swarm of bodachs, ominous presences signaling coming misery, swarming around a strange man with unusual hair. He trails the man to his house and discovers a doorway through which hundreds of bodachs pour into the world. The encounter hints at a violent scheme behind the visitor.

Through his investigation, Odd learns the man's name is Bob Robertson and nicknames him Fungus Bob for his fungal-looking hair. He reports his suspicions to Chief Porter, who orders two deputies to shadow the suspect. This sets up a chase and protective watch over potential danger.

Odd meets his girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn for dinner in the church belfry, where they sense danger as Fungus Bob approaches. They flee to the sacristy, which Robertson destroys as they escape. Stormy calls Chief Porter, who notes the vandalism but has no proof linking Bob.

Odd's psychic magnetism leads him and Stormy to a bowling alley, where the shirts from his vision become the mall's new uniform. Chief Porter then assigns Officer Simon Varner to watch the bowling alley to keep an eye on Fungus Bob.

Odd discovers Fungus Bob shot dead in his bathtub, with evidence that seems to frame Odd for the murder. He realizes Bob had been dead for some time and concludes the church encounter was with Bob’s restless spirit rather than the living man.

A home invasion shoots Chief Porter; Odd rushes him to the hospital. The Chief’s life is saved when a medallion Odd gave him deflects the bullet.

Odd investigates Bob’s fatal wound and finds a tattoo matching Officer Varner. He realizes Bob was eliminated by Bob’s co-conspirators because Odd began looking into him.

Back at the mall, Officer Eckles murders mall security staff, and Odd incapacitates him with a baseball bat. The chaos draws Varner deeper into the mall’s deadly plan.

Varner begins shooting through the mall while Bob’s moving van sits with explosives on a timer. Odd takes action and drives the van away from the mall to minimize casualties.

Varner clings to the outside of the van and tries to finish Odd. Odd jumps out as Varner enters the cab, sending the van into a man-made canal where it explodes, incinerating Varner and sparing bystanders.

Odd wakes in the hospital to be hailed as a town hero, but Stormy is later revealed to have been killed in the mall massacre. Porter tells Odd that Stormy’s spirit will linger for him, and urges him to let her go.

Porter’s counsel leads Odd to bid Stormy farewell, promising they will be reunited someday. With the immediate danger behind him, Odd travels to Las Vegas to continue his crusade.
