This documentary explores the life of Edward de Vere, the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford, and proposes a provocative theory about William Shakespeare. The film follows De Vere's year and a half spent traveling through Europe, particularly Venice, where he immersed himself in commedia dell’arte and gathered experiences that may have inspired the Shakespearean plays. Filmed on location in Venice, Verona, Mantua, Padua, and Brenta, the documentary features insights from Shakespeare scholars, actors, and directors, including Sir Derek Jacobi and Mark Rylance, and examines the possibility that De Vere’s bisexuality led him to use the pseudonym Shakespeare.
