The wealthy Winfield family travels to the United States aboard RMS Titanic, with Edwina newly engaged to Charles Fitzgerald. The family includes Edwina's parents Kate and Bert, her brothers George and Teddy, and younger sister Alexis, who is celebrating her sixth birthday. During the sinking, panic erupts as passengers scramble for lifeboats. Alexis is nowhere to be found as the chaos unfolds, and Kate convinces Edwina to take Teddy toward a boat while she stays behind to search for Alexis. The ship continues to sink, and the moment marks the beginning of the family's long separation.

Edwina reaches the freezing water and pulls her brother George from the sea, risking her own life in the process. They are later rescued by the RMS Carpathia, along with other survivors. Alexis is found to have survived, but their parents and Charles did not.

After arriving in Boston, Edwina struggles to resume normal life as the trauma of the sinking lingers. Edwina locates Alexis in Paris and discovers she is married to Malcolm Stone. Alexis reveals that Malcolm drugged her, escalating Edwina's determination to protect her sister. She threatens to sue Malcolm for kidnapping and rape.

Back in Boston, the Winfield family is reunited as George and Helen announce they will have a baby. Edwina softens toward her own mother for not boarding a lifeboat, and she is courted by Sam Horowitz, signaling a hopeful future for the family.
