Night and the City

Harry Fabian, an ambitious tout and con man, tries to make a name for himself in London. His relationships are strained, particularly with Mary Bristol, who is honest and disapproving of his schemes.

During a con at a wrestling match, Fabian witnesses an altercation between veteran Greek wrestler Gregorius and his son, Kristo, who controls the wrestling scene in London. Gregorius angrily leaves, frustrated with the state of wrestling's representation.

Fabian approaches Gregorius and Nikolas, hoping to gain their support for his wrestling venture. He believes with Gregorius on his side, he could host wrestling events without Kristo's interference.

Fabian presents his wrestling plans to Phil Nosseross and his wife Helen, seeking financial backing. Though skeptical, Phil agrees to provide half the investment if Fabian can match it, setting off a chain of desperate attempts to raise funds.

In a frantic search for funds, Fabian approaches various shady characters, including Figler and Googin, but finds no willing investors. He becomes increasingly desperate as the deadline for raising the money approaches.

Helen Nosseross unexpectedly offers Fabian £200 in exchange for a forged license to operate her nightclub. Fabian, seeing no other choice, agrees but plans to deceive her with a fake document.

Ignoring the warnings from Kristo’s associates, Fabian opens his wrestling gym with Gregorius and Nikolas as the stars and Nosseross as the silent partner. The new venture begins to attract attention and controversy within the wrestling community.

Kristo learns of his father's support for Fabian's gym and becomes furious. He plots with Nosseross to eliminate Fabian, but realizes they must first turn Gregorius against him to proceed with their plan.

Fabian manipulates events to arrange a fight between Gregorius and The Strangler, a popular wrestler favored by Kristo. Gregorius reluctantly agrees, believing it will showcase the superiority of traditional wrestling.

During the brutal match, Gregorius defeats The Strangler but suffers severe exhaustion, leading to his death in Kristo's arms. Fabian, realizing the repercussions of his actions, faces immediate peril as his support crumbles.

In retaliation for his father's death, Kristo places a £1,000 bounty on Fabian's head, igniting a manhunt across London's underworld. Fabian becomes a target, hunted through the night by Kristo's men.

Realizing the license Fabian gave her is a forgery, Helen returns to Phil, only to find he has taken his own life in despair over her departure. This tragedy deepens the chaos surrounding Fabian's actions.

Fabian seeks refuge at Anna's scow on the Thames, but Kristo tracks him down. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Fabian tries to divert blame to Mary but ultimately meets a tragic fate.

Caught by The Strangler, Fabian is killed on Hammersmith Bridge, his body unceremoniously thrown into the river. The immediate aftermath sees Kristo walk away, leaving chaos behind.

In the wake of the events, Mary is comforted by her neighbor Adam Dunne, who harbors feelings for her. The ending leaves her emotionally strained amidst the fallout of Fabian's disastrous choices.
