Vitya, Yuriy Nahratov, and Masha, Natalya Simonova, are two elementary school classmates who could not be more different: Vitya places his trust in science and technology, while Masha believes in miracles and hidden possibilities. As their school gears up for the New Year, Masha brings to life a sculpture of Father Frost with a magical spell, and the figure, voiced by Igor Efimov, waves them into a fairy-tale realm. There, the Snow Maiden is in peril, and to set things right, she needs these two unlikely allies to embark on a rescue mission. The Snow Maiden herself is portrayed by Irina Borisova, a presence whose warmth becomes the beacon of their quest.
Their goal is clear but dangerous: rescue the Snow Maiden from the clutches of Koschei, Nikolai Boyarsky, who has kidnapped her in order to orchestrate a sinister New Year for his evil spirits. The journey is not just a test of courage but a test of character. Father Frost offers three guiding maxims to navigate the perilous path: “don’t wait for someone to help you—help those in need,” “don’t get lost in a difficult moment,” and “hold on to each other when things get rough.” These principles become a running thread as the children face one obstacle after another, learning to rely on each other and on the courage they didn’t know they possessed.
To complicate matters, Koschei summons an impure force—the vocal-instrumental trio known as the Wild Guitars. The trio consists of Baba Yaga, Valentina Kosobutskaya, the legendary witch; Leshy, Georgiy Shtil, the forest spirit; and Wild Cat Matvei, Mikhail Boyarskiy, a nimble figure who adds a sly, mischievous edge to the journey. The siblings encounter these formidable foes as they slip away on a mortar and pestle from Baba Yaga, their flight echoing through a moonlit forest. Vitya even wields a self-made electroshock device to strike Leshy, while Masha cleverly unsettles Wild Cat Matvei, who darts across the trees with a giant slingshot and a mechanical mouse by his side.
On the path to Koschei’s kingdom, the travelers meet old friends who lend aid. The Stove, Vera Titova, the Apple Tree, Lyubov Virolainen, and the Old Man-Forester join their cause, offering guidance and support. In return, these helpful beings show the way using simple, almost folkloric tools—charcoal, an apple, and a ball—each item turning into a signpost that helps them push forward through the enchanted woods. The bond between the children and these forest helpers grows stronger as the peril intensifies.
The tension peaks when Koschei abducts Masha again, lowering her down an elevator into a dark dungeon. The Snow Maiden’s release becomes the price for Masha’s safety, and the two children must again trust one another to reach their goal. In a twist of resourcefulness, Masha finds a way to ease the sorcerer’s pain with a healing rinse, a clever gesture that ultimately unlocks a path to freedom for the Snow Maiden. Vitya then confronts Koschei in a duel and defeats him with nothing more than a magnet, turning what seemed like a desperate struggle into a moment of simple, science-meets-magic triumph.
Despite Koschei’s pursuit by the Wild Guitars, the trio of helpers—the Stove, the Apple Tree, and the Old Man-Forester—finish what they started and guide Vitya and Masha back to their school with the Snow Maiden in tow. Father Frost awaits the heroes at the hall, where the restored celebration of New Year can finally begin. Through courage, cooperation, and a blend of science and wonder, the children learn that true magic often hides in acts of kindness and stubborn perseverance.
