On Christmas Eve in the town of Hillwood, Arnold [Lane Toran] is determined to make his friend’s holiday special. He draws the name of Mr. Hyunh [Baoan Coleman], a kind-hearted man with a heartbreaking past, as part of the secret Santa gift exchange at the Sunset Arms boarding house. Arnold becomes deeply touched as he notices that Mr. Hyunh always appears extra sad during the festive season but realizes he doesn’t know much about his friend’s story.
Curious and compassionate, Arnold visits Mr. Hyunh and learns about his painful history. During the Vietnam War, Mr. Hyunh lived in Saigon, and due to dire circumstances, he was forced to relinquish his infant daughter, Mai [Hiep Thi Le], to American soldiers so she could escape the chaos and have a chance at a better life in the United States. This sacrifice haunted Mr. Hyunh for years, and after the war ended, he left Vietnam as a refugee to reunite with his daughter, who was taken to Hillwood, as a departing soldier had told him. However, despite his efforts, Mr. Hyunh has been unable to locate Mai over the years, and his longing for her remains unfulfilled, filling his heart with despair. Watching him, Arnold becomes resolved that his Christmas gift should be nothing less than reuniting Mr. Hyunh with Mai.
With only hours left before Christmas, Arnold enlists the help of his loyal friend Gerald [Jamil Walker Smith], and together they embark on a mission to find Mai. Their search begins at the city’s records office, where an overworked employee assists them in their quest. To motivate his cooperation, Arnold and Gerald agree to do the employee’s unfinished Christmas shopping, hoping this will be the key to finding Mai. Unfortunately, the last item on the shopping list—a pair of exclusive, high-end snow boots—becomes a major obstacle. The boots, a coveted gift, are already with Helga [Francesca Marie Smith], who had received a pair from her parents earlier that day. Torn between helping her beloved Arnold and keeping her rare sign of parental love, Helga finds herself conflicted.
As the deadline looms, Helga makes a bold decision. She leaves her socks outside, approaches the city employee, and convinces him to help locate Mai in exchange for her prized snow boots. Her selfless act pays off when the employee tracks down Mai, and the reunion occurs just in time for Christmas Day. Mr. Hyunh is overwhelmed with joy as he finally sees his daughter again, tears of happiness streaming down his face. The emotional embrace captures the true spirit of Christmas, representing hope, sacrifice, and the power of kindness.
Meanwhile, Arnold is initially surprised by the miraculous reunion, but Gerald reassures him that Christmas is often filled with unexpected blessings, suggesting that a Christmas angel must have been watching over them all. Outside the building, Helga quietly observes the heartfelt reunion from a distance. Standing in her socks after leading Mai to her father, Helga whispers softly, indeed feeling the warmth of her own unspoken desire, “Merry Christmas, Arnold.”
This touching story beautifully highlights themes of love, perseverance, and the magic of the holiday season, reminding viewers that sometimes, Christmas miracles come from the kindness we show to others.
