Mysterious Island of Beautiful Women

In 1954, a mixed-race group of orphan girls and a Catholic nun escape the fall of Indochina by plane. Their flight is buffeted by a storm, endangering everyone aboard as the craft struggles to stay aloft.

In 1979, six men from an oil company set out to reach Guam so that one of them, blinded by injury, can have his sight restored at a hospital. Their voyage goes off course after radio and navigation equipment fail during an electrical storm, and they crash on a remote island.

The men encounter a group of women in their late 20s who are fearful of men and wary of their presence on the island. Tensions rise as the women and men gauge potential threats and possibilities for interaction.

The women have limited vocabularies and recite prayers in front of a distorted cross formed by a three-bladed propeller on a post. This symbol anchors their beliefs and daily routines.

Lizbeth emerges as the ruthless leader who consults an unseen 'sister' on all major decisions. Her authority begins to be questioned as the men challenge her rule.

The colonized past is revealed: two women were impregnated by natives, but the male child was killed while the girl was spared. The people recount this history to justify their current practices and power dynamics.

Some of the men befriend certain women, while others are captured on Lizbeth's orders and threatened with death. The island's dangers escalate as loyalties shift.

One man discovers the plane that the girls crashed in 25 years earlier; the pilots were killed and the nun was severely injured. The nun's diary reveals that the oldest girl, Lizabeth, became a mother figure for the others and cared for the nun until her death five years later.

Upon learning the nun's diary, the other women see how Lizbeth's authority sprang from fear and manipulation rather than stewardship. Corroborating details undermine her control and sow doubt among the group.

The women rise against Lizbeth and she is killed by the woman who earlier lost her male baby, ending her tyrannical rule. The power structure among the women shifts as rivalries are resolved.

The men salvage a working direction finder from the other plane, enabling a potential escape plan. With this device, they prepare to leave the island in their plane, taking some of the women with them.

The group lifts off in the men’s plane, heading toward Guam with the island women joining as passengers. The journey marks a fragile new start as they leave behind the danger and tyranny of the island.
