In 1865, five POWs escape Fort Richmond by balloon, but a storm damages it and they crash‑land on a desert island in the Pacific. Their leader, engineer Cyrus Smith, appears to drown but resurfaces unharmed with amnesia. He is joined by journalist Gedeon Spilett, sailor Bonaventure Pencroff, orphan Harbert Brown, Smith’s servant Nab, and the dog Top.
