What Happens in My Fault: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of My Fault (2023) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Noah, seventeen-year-old, moves into a luxurious new home after her mother Rafaela marries billionaire William Leister, a change that tests her sense of safety and belonging in ways she did not expect. She struggles to adjust and immediately clashes with her new stepbrother, Nick Leister, a rebellious street racer whose world is fast, flashy, and often dangerous.

On their first evening, Noah is taken to the Leisters' country club for dinner. Despite a closet full of expensive clothes, she opts for an oversized Ramones tee, signaling the tension between her stubborn independence and the gilded setting. Soon after arriving, both Noah and Nick want to leave, and William asks his son to drop her off at home first.

En route, the argument between Noah and Nick escalates, and he forcefully ejects her from the car. Left to hitchhike down a lonely road, she accepts a ride from someone heading to a party. Nick, meanwhile, becomes the center of that party, where Noah watches in dismay as he flirts and kisses several women. When a party-crasher spikes Noah’s drink, Nick helps throw him out and then drives her home for the night.

The next morning, Noah grills Nick about what happened, but he insists nothing happened. They cross paths again at the beach and later at a rally, where the tension simmering between them begins to change. Noah starts receiving upsetting messages from unknown sources—images of her ex-boyfriend Dan and her best friend Betty whom she left behind—while Nick casually suggests they could exchange provocative photos of each other, intensifying the dangerous edge of their growing relationship.

Dan shows up, attempting to apologize to Noah, and Nick taunts him while doing his best to stay unrecognizable. Local guys from a rival gang arrive, and Nick fends them off, underscoring the perilous environment they inhabit. A car ride later reveals that Noah learned about racing from her father, Jonás, who she says is dead. The two eventually find themselves at an arena that doubles as a fight club, where Nick is revealed as the star attraction. Noah declares she cannot stay near someone so violent, even as their bond deepens.

William later reveals to Nick that Noah’s abusive father has just been released from jail and is seeking revenge. Jonás had beaten Rafaela for years, but her testimony had put him away. Noah has not been told he is out, because Rafaela knows the knowledge would terrify her daughter.

At a party later, Noah—drunk and terrified of the dark—gets locked in a closet as a prank, triggering a brutal flashback of the night Jonás hurt her. Nick brings her home, and she asks him to stay by her side through the night to ease the nightmares.

The situation escalates when Jonás, with the help of Ronnie, kidnaps Noah and demands a ransom. Nick teams up with the police to track her down, triggering a high-stakes car chase that ends with Jonás being killed. Even though their relationship is discovered and their parents disapprove, Nick and Noah decide to stay together, facing a future that intertwines loyalty, danger, and a fragile, evolving love.

My Fault Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about My Fault (2023): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Noah's mother keep her father Jonás's release from jail a secret?

Rafaela kept Jonás's release hidden because he was an abusive husband who beat her for years, and she knew the news would terrify Noah. She had testified against him to put him in jail, so she feared he might seek revenge on both of them once free. Rafaela's decision comes from a protective instinct, though it ultimately puts Noah in danger by leaving her unaware of the threat.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show Noah's trauma responses to the dark and close spaces, hinting at the abuse she suffered.

Q2

Why does Nick force Noah out of the car on their first night?

Nick ejects Noah from the car because their argument escalates intensely during the drive home from the country club. Both are stubborn and rebellious, and the tension between them boils over. Nick's harsh decision to leave her on a lonely road reflects his aggressive personality and the immediate hostility he feels toward his new step-sister.

Foreshadowing: The dinner scene establishes their clashing personalities when both want to leave early.

Q3

Why does Nick suggest Noah send provocative photos of herself?

Nick's offer to exchange provocative photos reveals his manipulative and controlling side. While it appears to be an intimate gesture, it actually represents a coercive element in their dynamic. This moment highlights how their relationship mixes genuine attraction with unhealthy power dynamics, setting up the dangerous emotional territory they enter.

Foreshadowing: This coercive behavior foreshadows the toxic patterns that will emerge as their relationship deepens.

Q4

What is the fight club and why is Nick involved?

The fight club is an underground arena where Nick works as the star attraction, participating in physical fights for money and entertainment. This reveals a hidden dangerous side of Nick that contrasts with his street-racing persona. His involvement in violence is what ultimately causes Noah to question whether she can be with someone who participates in such brutal activities.

Q5

Why does Noah say she cannot stay with someone so violent?

Noah's reaction to the fight club stems from her traumatic past with her abusive father Jonás. Seeing Nick participate in organized violence triggers her PTSD and reminds her of the abuse she suffered. She cannot separate Nick from the violent men in her history, even though her feelings for him are growing. This creates a crucial conflict between her emotional attraction and her psychological need for safety.

Q7

Why do William and Rafaela disapprove of Noah and Nick's relationship?

Even though they share no biological connection, the family views their romantic involvement as inappropriate and forbidden. Additionally, their parents recognize the toxic dynamics and dangerous circumstances surrounding them, making the relationship seem reckless and doomed.

However, she doesn't know about the specific rules Nick's team operates under, leading to a costly mistake.
