My Sunshine (2025) Plot Summary Explained

Takuya is a young boy who seems to lack motivation during his baseball and hockey practices, often appearing absent-minded. After a hockey match in which he takes on the role of the goalie, he finds himself captivated by Sakura, a girl who is practicing figure skating. This newfound interest inspires Takuya to experiment with spirals and spins using his hockey skates. His talent catches the attention of Arakawa, who is Sakura's coach and a former competitive figure skater. Recognizing Takuya's potential, Arakawa offers him his old figure skates and starts giving him lessons at no cost.

Meanwhile, Arakawa frequently visits a gas station where his partner, Igarashi, works. Back at their home, Igarashi notes that Arakawa seems to be in higher spirits and talks excitedly about skating since he began mentoring Takuya. As Takuya progresses, Arakawa proposes that Takuya and Sakura join forces to skate together as a pair for ice dancing. Although Sakura initially feels hesitant—having been trained by Arakawa in women's singles figure skating—she eventually agrees to learn the Dutch waltz, all while preparing for an upcoming badge test.

During a practice session at a frozen lake, the trio forges a closer bond. Together, they successfully master the pattern dance. However, their relationship becomes strained when Sakura accidentally witnesses a moment of intimacy between Arakawa and Igarashi, leading her to privately confront Arakawa about his intentions towards Takuya and expressing her disapproval of his actions.

When the badge test day arrives, Takuya and Arakawa wait anxiously for Sakura's arrival, but she does not show up. Following this incident, Sakura's mother decides to end her daughter's lessons with Arakawa, stating that although Sakura wishes to continue figure skating, she does not want to be coached by him anymore and advises him to keep his distance.

Feeling disheartened, Takuya returns to hockey while Sakura resumes her training for singles skating. In the meantime, Igarashi confides in Takuya that he cannot leave his father's gas station business, but now that he has no students at the local rink, he's free to coach elsewhere.

As spring blooms, Takuya walks home from school, clad in an oversized middle school uniform and carrying his baseball gear. While driving by, Arakawa greets Takuya, and they find themselves heading to the thawed lake where they previously practiced. While enjoying a game of catch, Takuya notices some boxes in the trunk of Arakawa's car and inquires if he is planning to leave, asking whether he would return at all. Arakawa admits he is uncertain about his future and about Takuya returning his figure skates, reassuring him that they were a gift.

Later, Takuya, still holding onto the figure skates, approaches the rink and spots Sakura as she exits, having just performed her single program to a portion of Clair de lune. The film concludes with Takuya preparing to speak to Sakura, leaving the audience intrigued about what might unfold next in their story.
