The film opens in a cozy café where a group of teenagers is embroiled in a heated argument. Their sour moods are overshadowed by the enchanting melodies of a trio of girls performing in a corner, hinting at the underlying tensions that will unfold.

The trio of girls, led by Adagio Dazzle, realizes they need to harness more negative energy to regain their powers. They become intrigued by a bright flash outside that reveals remnants of Equestrian Magic, driving them to track down its source.

At Canterlot High School, students are abuzz with excitement as they prepare for the upcoming Musical Showcase. Amidst this festive atmosphere, Sunset Shimmer is on a path of redemption but is haunted by her troubled past and the skepticism from her peers.

During the Showcase preparations, Sunset witnesses her friends inexplicably growing pony ears and tails while they play music. This surprising and unsettling occurrence raises concerns about what is happening to them.

Sunset Shimmer warmly welcomes three new students—Adagio, Sonata, and Aria—to Canterlot High. However, she soon becomes apprehensive about their dark demeanor and the red pendants they wear, sensing a danger that others do not.

The Dazzlings burst into the cafeteria, performing a captivating song that enchants nearly everyone in the room. This song ignites a competitive spirit among the students, steering the social dynamics to their advantage, except for Sunset and her friends.

Despite the Mane 5's suspicions about the Dazzlings, their attempts to alert Principal Celestia and Vice-Principal Luna prove futile. The Dazzlings have enchanted the principals to turn the Musical Showcase into a Battle of the Bands, seizing the opportunity for dominance.

In urgency, the Mane 5 considers reaching out to Twilight Sparkle for assistance but discovers the portal connecting their worlds is sealed. Sunset recalls an old journal used for communication with Princess Celestia, leading her to write a desperate message.

Twilight receives Sunset's message and learns from her research that the Dazzlings are actually sinister creatures known as 'The Sirens.' Once exiled by Starswirl the Bearded, they thrive on negativity, bringing added urgency to Twilight's mission.

To assist her friends, Twilight creates a temporary portal using the journal’s magic. Accompanied by Spike, she travels through to reunite with her friends, eager to share her findings and devise a plan to combat the Dazzlings.

At a significant party, Twilight and her friends confront the Dazzlings, but their magical hold has sown discord among the performers. Though they attempt to unite by invoking 'Friendship is Magic,' their efforts seem ineffective, leading to embarrassment in their ranks.

Pondering their failed attempts, Sunset realizes that the source of the Dazzlings’ power lies in their music. The group resolves to create a musical counter-spell as the only way to counteract the Dazzlings’ evil influence before the Battle of the Bands.

During the auditions for the Battle of the Bands, the group encounters sabotage from their peers, compounded by personal struggles that hinder their performances. Sunset steps in, hoping to rally them, while keeping an eye on the Dazzlings’ activities.

The auditions conclude with only the Dazzlings, the Rainbooms, and Trixie left to compete for the finals. Despite an embarrassing mishap during their performance, they secure their place in the finals, ready to face the Dazzlings once again.

As tensions rise and bickering ensues among the Rainbooms, Sunset urges them to set aside their differences. Recognizing their negative energy is exactly what the Dazzlings want, they unite, reaffirming their bond as they prepare for the ultimate musical showdown.
