Clifford Peache, portrayed by Chris Makepeace, resides in a lavish hotel in Chicago alongside his father, who manages the establishment, and his quirky yet affectionate grandmother, played by Ruth Gordon. Their evenings are typically spent enjoyably on the rooftop terrace, where Clifford sometimes gazes through a telescope to observe the neighbors. As the new student at Lake View High School, he arrives in style, riding in a hotel limousine.
Unfortunately, Clifford quickly becomes a target for a bully named Melvin Moody, depicted by Matt Dillon. Alongside his gang—Dubrow (Richard Bradley), Koontz (Tim Reyna), and Hightower (Dean R. Miller)—Moody terrorizes weaker students and extorts their lunch money, all while claiming to protect them from the school’s outcast, the brooding Ricky Linderman, played by Adam Baldwin. Legends surrounding Ricky suggest he has a dark past, including the tragic death of his younger brother in an incident involving a gun. A teacher, played by Kathryn Grody, clarifies to Clifford that the only real violence linked to Ricky was an unfortunate accident.
Determined to find protection, Clifford musters the courage to approach Ricky and request that he act as his bodyguard against Moody’s gang. Although Ricky declines the offer, fate brings them closer when he intervenes to save Clifford from a brutal attack by Moody and his crew. During their budding friendship, it becomes clear that Ricky is grappling with deep emotional scars from his brother’s death a year prior and is slowly warming up as he rebuilds a cherished motorcycle.
Their camaraderie strengthens as Clifford assists Ricky in scouring junkyards for a rare engine cylinder for the motorcycle. But trouble lurks anew when Clifford and Ricky, along with some friends—including fellow victims like Shelley, played by Joan Cusack, and Carson (Paul Quandt)—enjoy lunch at Lincoln Park. Moody reappears, this time accompanied by a menacing bodybuilder named Mike (Hank Salas), who uses intimidation tactics to impose fear. In a particularly cruel act, Mike vandalizes Ricky’s motorcycle before it is pushed into a lagoon, prompting Ricky to flee from the scene in distress.
Later, Ricky comes to Clifford seeking money to retrieve his motorcycle. This encounter causes tension between them, and in a moment of vulnerability, Ricky confesses the painful truth that he accidentally shot his brother while babysitting, a revelation that weighs heavily on his conscience. As Moody and Mike continue their reign of terror at the park, Ricky unexpectedly spots them while retrieving his motorcycle. A confrontation ensues, with Moody demanding the bike. When Ricky stands his ground, a physical altercation breaks out, with Clifford ultimately stepping in to help his friend.
Instead of fighting for Clifford, Ricky encourages him to confront Moody, coaching him through the process. Though initially intimidated, Clifford finds his courage and delivers a decisive punch that shatters Moody’s nose, leading him to realize that the bully is fundamentally just a coward. As the park scene wraps up, Ricky retrieves his bike, and in a light-hearted moment, playfully asks Clifford if he would like to be his bodyguard.
