Tun Nila refuses to marry any woman in Pura Cendana because he believes they lack true honor and do not qualify as real 'females' with noble qualities. This defiance enrages the king, who then decrees that Tun Nila must search for such a woman elsewhere if she exists, and forbids him from returning to the palace or shaving his beard until he finds her.

Tun Nila creates a test using a bag containing rice, salt, chili, onions, garlic, and spices. He will marry any woman who can cook a complete meal using only those exact ingredients. The test serves as a measure of wit and practicality, proving whether a woman can transform basic ingredients into something meaningful.

Puspawangi sees the test as a genuine challenge of wit rather than an absurd request. She carefully separates the ingredients, cooks them into various dishes, and serves a complete meal to her family that night. When her father learns the dishes came from the bag's contents, he is astonished by her cleverness, which impresses Tun Nila enough to shave his beard and propose.

The king and his ministers become entranced by Puspawangi's beauty and conspire to separate her from Tun Nila. The king pretends to be ill and claims only the mystical bearded civet can cure him, hinting that the civet fears women. This ruse allows them to send Tun Nila on a hunting expedition, leaving Puspawangi alone at the palace so they can pursue her themselves.

While Tun Nila is away, the king and each minister visit Puspawangi separately hoping to win her affection. She cleverly pretends to reciprocate their interest while stalling for time. She sets each man ridiculous tasks to prove their love and instructs them to hide whenever the next suitor arrives, causing chaos and exposing their foolishness.

The 'ghost' at the window is actually Tun Nila in disguise, who has returned early from his hunt and hidden beneath the house. He overhears the entire conspiracy and witnesses Puspawangi's clever manipulation of the suitors. He reveals himself after the king and ministers flee in fright, praising Puspawangi for her loyalty and wit.

Tun Nila and Puspawangi present a chest to the king, claiming it contains the bearded civet they were sent to find. When the chest is opened, the minister who had hidden inside during the ghost incident is revealed. With the trapped minister exposed and no bearded civet appearing, the king's entire plot collapses and the conspirators are exposed.

When the king decrees that Tun Nila must find a worthy woman or never return to the palace or shave his beard, Tun Nila accepts the challenge. His beard grows thick over months of traveling, becoming a visible symbol of his stubborn vow and the passage of time. He only shaves it once Puspawangi proves herself through her cooking test.

After Puspawangi successfully cooks with the ingredients from his bag, Tun Nila shaves his beard the next morning, revealing his handsome face underneath. He then explains his quest to Puspawangi's father and formally asks for her hand in marriage, which her parents gladly accept.

The king and ministers become jealous of Tun Nila and want him out of the way because they are captivated by Puspawangi's beauty. Their conspiracy to send Tun Nila hunting for the bearded civet is designed to separate the couple so they can each pursue Puspawangi themselves, hoping to replace Tun Nila in her affection.

Musang Berjanggut explores the triumph of intelligence over power, as Puspawangi's wit overcomes the king's political scheming. The story celebrates loyalty, as both characters remain devoted to each other despite manipulation. It also emphasizes that true worth is proven through cleverness and character rather than status or physical beauty.
