Arthur Conan Doyle recounts the real‑life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes by detailing his encounter with Dr. Joseph Bell, the astute Edinburgh surgeon who mentored him as a medical student. The TV movie acted as the pilot for the BBC miniseries Murder Rooms: Mysteries of the Real Sherlock Holmes, which follows Doyle as a young GP in Southsea solving crimes alongside his former mentor Bell.
