Sameer Malhotra [Salman Khan] is ill-tempered and has anger-management issues since his childhood, a struggle that only his best friend could help him manage—Arun [Akshay Kumar]—until a violent outburst changes everything. After he beats up a group of goons who assault his girlfriend Roma [Amrita Arora], she leaves him because his temper overshadows the romance. According to his horoscope, Sameer is unlucky in love, and to escape further trouble, he becomes a lifeguard in Goa.
On a train, Sameer’s co-passenger Suraj [Satish Shah] makes him fear he’s a thief by probing where he keeps money in his luggage. Sameer stays awake all night to guard his belongings, while Suraj pretends to sleep, only to confess the ruse the next morning at the station. Suraj, who works as a security guard at Sameer’s resort, puts him on night duty for three months, a decision that strains Suraj’s marriage and tests Sameer’s stubbornness.
Sameer soon meets his next-door neighbor Rani [Priyanka Chopra Jonas], an aspiring fashion designer. She has a rocky start with her father, Colonel Dugraj Singh [Amrish Puri], a former colonel, but she and Sameer grow closer as friends. The peace is threatened when Sameer disagrees with the Colonel, and Rani overhears him speaking ill about her to Pandit Raj Purohit Jyotshi, also known as Paul (the astrologer) [Rajpal Yadav].
Trouble arrives in the form of Sunny [Akshay Kumar], who shares a room with Sameer. Sunny meets Rani, falls for her, and begins exploiting Sameer’s missteps. The tension between the roommates deepens as Sameer quietly supports Rani by funding her fashion competition—his money intended for his grandmother’s eye surgery and his sister’s wedding. Rani wins and yearns to meet her anonymous benefactor, but Sunny arrives first, claiming to be the well-wisher and whisking her away. Sameer pursues them on his motorcycle and ends up injuring Singh in the process.
Sunny further complicates things by taking credit for a painting of Rani by Sameer, then kidnapping her dog Tommy and framing Sameer. To clear his name, Sameer buys an identical dog and tells Singh he has found Tommy, but the deception falls apart when the dog bites Singh and bolts after a cold bath reveals the ruse.
Despite the turmoil, Sameer and Rani reconcile with help from a magician at a New Year’s Eve party. Yet the drama continues when Sunny places a bar dancer in Sameer’s room; Rani, who had come to invite him for breakfast, walks in on the dancer and believes they had sex. She also fears that Sameer has become the leader of the Eagle Gang, a roaming biker group in Goa that stirs trouble.
A renewed attempt at reconciliation follows. When Sameer visits Rani’s home, he finds Suraj there again—Rani’s uncle who now knows how he feels about her. Sameer apologizes and frees Suraj from night-duty obligations. Then Pushpa, Sameer’s partially blind grandmother [Shashikala], mistakes Rani’s mother for Rani herself and urges marriage to Sameer. Rani’s mother counsels her daughter to think carefully about who she loves more: Sameer or Sunny.
Deciding to leave Goa, Sameer faces Sunny’s taunts, who claims that his closeness to Rani arose from Sameer’s own mistakes. Out of determination, Sameer proclaims he has stopped dreaming and wishes Sunny happiness, prompting a final showdown at a stadium where India and Pakistan play a friendly match. In a dramatic moment, he storms the stage, takes the microphone from guest of honor Kapil Dev [Kapil Dev], and publicly apologizes to Rani and her family. He asks for her hand in marriage in front of thousands, and Rani runs onto the field to embrace him, reuniting the couple.
The truth about Sunny is revealed: he is actually Arun, the friend who came to Goa to help Sameer overcome his anger. Arun had returned from the United States after 19 years, met Pushpa, and learned about Sameer’s heartbreak and departure to Goa. He decided to help by posing as an adversary to guide Sameer toward growth. In the end, Sameer and Rani marry, and Arun conducts their wedding, sealing a new chapter built on understanding, forgiveness, and renewed love.
